Or were the murders just a 'happy accident'?
I just rewound and watched the end again. There is no mention of the murders in the denouement. Were those murders were part of the final art installation or did I miss something?
Were some of the paintings depictions of the murders?
I believe they used the murders as part of their hoax. They had nothing to do with them, but used them as a possible reason for their disappearance. They probably read the stories in detail and left their car in a strategic place for police to think it could be connected - which it obviously wasn't.
