Almonds Are Not "Picked"

Almonds are harvested by machines. First a machine shakes the tree causing the almonds to fall to the ground. A machine then sweeps the nuts into rows and gathers them up. http://www.almonds.com/consumers/about-almonds/almond-lifecycle#tc-harvest

The movie takes place in 1987, so do you know if the harvesting was done by hand then?

Sorry, I haven't been living here that long... I just don't want people to come out of this movie thinking that the almonds they buy in the store were picked by hand.

I can understand why that is such a hot button issue for you.

Is it okay if they they think they were picked in 1987......when the movie takes place? (nearly 30 years ago)

reply

This took place in the eighties...

reply

1987, ding-dong.

Depends on the rancher and how many acres he/she has. If ranchers have three different crops, as my friend's father had, they can't possibly buy different equipment for each crop. Often they will either MacGyver something to the tractor or --shocker-- use pickers.

reply

All picking machines use the same technique of shaking with sticks

reply

1987 isnt THAT long. farming technology existed in the 80s...

this movie is filled with fiction, like the fact that a football coach know everything about long-distance running, or at least enough to win a championship on first try.

They were knocking the trees in the 60's, before they went to shakers, which damaged the trees less. Haven't seen the movie, but certainly no hand picking.

"Nits", however, are apparently perpetually hand-picked by those with Movie Gotcha OCD....
