Separating the Facts from the Fiction in McFarland, USA

McFarland, USA seems to contain a decent amount of fiction:

Thanks. That's a great article.

Great article.

That was a great article that cleared up sone of the things I saw during the movie. Especially the history of coach White. The movie made him out to be another Norman Dale a coach at his last stop after problems at previous stops. Nice to know that was not the case.

reply

Who the hell is Normal Dale?

reply

See the movie 'Hoosiers'.

Thanks for this article, matrix.

My wife and I just saw and loved this film this morning. Great film, and knowing how much was real, now, makes me appreciate it even more. I am not bothered by the fictional parts. Great to know the important facts--about the kids going to college and all, were authentic.

Hopefully they'll just do a documentary on the History channel now to clear everything up. I like documentaries much more than I like reading articles.

reply

From reading the article, the movie seems very accurate.

Let's hope the History channel does a better job than they are doing with Texas Rising.

That site is pretty good.
Yeah it's all pretty ridiculous

I was just about to watch this until I found out how they screwed it up. If you have a true story leave it alone. None of the changes make the story any better.

How do you know without watching it?

reply

If you haven't watched it yet, watch it. The movie variations are mild, IMO, and really don't take anything away from the true events.

I really, really hope you decided to watch this movie. It's fantastic..Whether they changed some of the story or not, it's such a wonderful movie!

I thought it was a very uplifting and enjoyable movie. I like that the article started out with this quote. Thanks for sharing the article, it was interesting to get the story!

It's not a documentary. It's based on a true story, but not everything's very factual, but it's still an enjoyable movie. ...I didn't do some of the things they had me doin' in there, but that's alright, that's Hollywood. We developed a program. Did I do it that way, no, but it's okay in the movie. It turned out fine. -Jim White, September 2014, PrepCalTrack.com
