You know, to be honest I did picture Riley to be black during the silly scenes and considered whether or not the monkey term would go over well with audiences. The honest answer is that it wouldn't. I think you're confusing apes with gorillas. No scientist in the world believes humans are descended from GORILLAS. And we aren't. But APE refers to the overall family of primates that includes gorillas, chimpanzees, humans, and orangutans (I'm probably missing a few, but those are the main ones). So, since humans are a type of ape, and (at the moment, anyway) only humans give birth to other humans, we are indeed descended from apes.
