Well I don't think they really have to regard age completely. They've taken some liberties with time already. Michealangelo could be a young boy that rivals Leonardos mind for the first time. Or could be the vatican's secret child genius weapon they adopt instead of leonardo.
Raffaello would be cool too. And Donatello could be the secret son of the artist.
You think it might matter that Donntello would be 96 years old and Dead for about 12 years? Raphael not even a fetus yet? Yeah, there's taking liberty to an extent, but losing all possible credibility is another thing.

When there's time travel, Leo seeing the mona lisa, the spearhead that stabbed jesus, a dracula and other interesting things like that, then I'm pretty sure they could bring other great artists into the fold without loosing credibility.
