Tried to fit too much in to the plot (spoilers)

They tried to fit too much into the plot. The film should either have been about a parent trying to reconnect with their child after deployment, in which case a male should have been cast, as overwhelmingly this has been and remains a male problem or they could have made a film about a female medics experience in Afghan (i.e. the other soldier attempting to force himself on her and her treatment as a woman, even as a woman with children. Having the two combined, takes away from both and doesn't allow either to be properly considered or developed and what you end up with is a rather superficial military drama

I disagree, the subplot with Donovan was revealed in bits and pieces and was directly related to her issues back in El Paso. It was interesting film about a strong attractive female finding her place.

I also disagree! I think you got it all wrong. The film fits a bit of everything like it should have, because one's life is never made of only one thing or one experience alone, but made of more experiences brought together. Like the film showed, being abroad on duty in Afghanistan wasn't just about the job itself, but about all the other things in her life and the consequences it had to be there. And this is NOT superficial at all. If the film writers, producers, director etc. only dealt with her going in Afghanistan and working there, without showing any personal life implications, the movie would have been superficial in that case!

Yeah, you did not understand the clue of the movie. It was about a soldier who had too take difficult decisions between duty and kid. Tthere were many movies showhing soldiers in Iraq or Afganistan, this probem is completely different.😐
