reinlist

She misses her child terribly so she reenlists partway through her deployment ?

reply

Yes, because she originally thought that she would not go back again on deployment. Things like that happen a lot in the military. They promise you one thing, then, change their mind.

reply

Plus they give big bonus money to re-up. It's hard to pass up.

Probably not for her. Her MOS group is not high demand.

A 68W is almost never higher than tier 3 in SRBs. A 3 year reup would get her about 5k. 4 years 7k. By comparison SF MOS group is tier 10, always never changes. 3 years at her rank would get an 18B 50k. Critical skills retention bonus may be higher and is often available to medics but it would never happen on a deployment. Actually the Army does a pretty good job at making sure people can't reenlist while deployed. See reuping in a tax free area, gets you a tax free bonus. You either need to reup before deploying or do an extension or in some cases get involuntarily extended, in some cases transferred to non-deployable status till getting out.

reply

Is that right? Not as much as I thought she'd get.

They are very slick. A Sgt. or Specialist might actually get more. They count on E-6s and E-7s to have that moral connection like the character. Her better bet would be to reclass to another MOS maybe something more specific in the medical field. Either that or work up to SNCO and the bonus will be better.

Really? I was a medic (MOS 91D20) and I was offered a substantial re-up bonus (0ver $70,000 in today's money), because my MOS was deemed a critical one.

reply

why did she enlist at all with a 3 year old? It was refreshing to see an ex-husband who was not the bad guy, he was more sensible and mature.

reply

Because she believed in her duty to take care of those wounded soldiers.

reply

Because she's a good soldier and a bad mother.

reply

By looking at the overall context, this is an extremely sexist thing for you to say. Because of such sexist attitudes, many women in the military are being treated like crap. Shame on you!

reply

They were repeating something the movie said about the male soldier who claimed to be a good soldier and bad father...

reply

Since she was already a SSG she must have been in the Army for some time when she went.
She said it was her second deployment, too.
