Interesting pairing

He's almost 20 yrs older than her...
Nothing wrong with it but interesting they cast him when they could've chosen someone younger and more popular eg. Chris Pine, Channing Tatum, etc.

I thought his age was fine - you need time to develop the sort of skills and reputation that this guy had. She was a bit young in comparison (the juxtaposition of his killing and her teenage tantrum in the closet was a bit jarring) but overall I liked their chemistry together.

Edit: also, as someone Anna's age, I'd pick Sam Rockwell over those other two 365 days of the year. I reckon that once the younger person in the couple reaches about 30 then any age difference really doesn't mean much, although I think her character was meant to be a bit younger than Anna's age, and Sam's character a bit younger than his age as well.

I'm in 100% of agreement! Hollywood guys my age do nothing for me. Give me a charismatic and handsome older actor with acting chops and I'm sold! Anthony Hopkins and Kevin Costner were my biggest crushes as a teen ;-)

He looks pretty young still. I think it worked.

reply

I'd say he looks fine for his age, sure, but paired with someone young like her, with her tout skin, he looks like a sharpei

reply

Yeah I thought he was 40yo. But he is like almost 50! Anyways great chemistry

reply

You ARE kidding, right? What are you...like some old unmarried gal, hyper-aware of movie characters REAL ages. lol. Noone else could play THIS part better than Sam Rockwell. That's probably why he was chosen.....the result is just a really great movie.

reply

@EmmaPopell--you are SO RIGHT.

Casting a film is the most important part, and they certainly got this one right!

reply

Woah lol .. some old unmarried gal? What era are you from?!

reply

Lol. I'm old. 61. But I feel 25.

reply

I like Sam Rockwell, but this material is way beneath him.

I don't know.....I can't think of anyone else who could make this character so fun to believe..except Sam Rockwell. He has the perfect balance of crazy, graceful, and slyly sexy that fits this part, and Anna, perfect quirky match. Don't understand how a mere script can be "beneath" any actor...if that actor brings Life to the role in it. I just love this film, so I am very biased, regarding it. lol Sam Rockwell is great in this, imo. Did you notice John Landis' kid wrote it? It's dark and funny. A rare combination, these days.

reply

I agree that Sam Rockwell is perfect in this role: he's likable, funny, unhinged, and unpredictable, all at the same time.

And, despite the age difference, Anna Kendrick's comedic talents are well utilized. I can only imagine what the pair of them were like on set.

If you enjoyed this, I recommend American Ultra, also written by Max Landis, with Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart as another unlikely duo, mixing dark comedy with a touch of romance, and a large serving of violence.

Two more really enjoyable films also come to mind in the 'innocent woman gets mixed up with a killer, but it's a comedy' genre: Red (2010), with Bruce Willis and Mary Louise Parker; and Wild Target (2010), with Emily Blunt and Bill Nighy. So fun.
