Same universe as American Ultra? (Spoiler-ish)

I saw Mr. Right this afternoon, and when Roth's character referenced the American Ultra project that both he and Francis had been apart of prior to leaving the CIA, I wondered if it was just a coincidence or not. This was before I realized that they were both written by Max Landis.

I actually really enjoyed American Ultra, for probably the same reasons that I enjoyed Mr. Right, so I like that their was a quick nod to the two film's connection. Also, I think that it offers insight into Francis' background, without having to lay it all out on the table for the audience.

Let me start this with: don't take the stories and plots of both movies too seriously, fun over consistency, yada yada bla.

I think it was more of a throwback, rather then a genuine connection. Above the tongue-in-cheek humor, this movie had a lot of parody going on. They played the whole hit-man thing more like a superpower, as evidenced by Kendrik's character. To me it was a meta commentary on action movies in general.

But, who knows, maybe it was a solid connection.

The Ultra program in AU seems to be loosely inspired by the mind control-oriented MK Ultra program from the US government in the 60s. Except that (from what I understand) that program was never intended to produce assassins.

So, in short, I don't know if the reference was intentional but at this point, I think we can assume that it was the same program. Although, really, like Ronin-Trap says it's likely that it's all tongue-in-cheek. I actually like the idea of American Ultra and Mr. Right taking place in the same universe. Should there ever be a sequel to either movie, I'd love to see Francis and Martha interact with Phoebe and Mike.

There was another reference in this film as well. The part where the dude was like "I'm Johnny *beep* Moon". That was Sam Rockwell's character in A Single Shot.. I think it's supposed to be just little humor points, but I could be totally wrong of course..

This makes me wonder, who would win in a fight, Francis or Mike Howell?
