So who ever it was that designed this entire system never imagined that the pods the technicians were in might break down. Hey let's build a few extra and throw them down there just in case. I mean after all, these guys are the only hope for the human species. Beyond stupid.

Seriously, especially because they could collapse down to nothing. It made no sense that the spare was somewhere they would have to waste a ton of air to get to. They should have had a whole damn closet of them.
