Why did they need to vote?

I don't get what the purpose of the vote was. Wasn't it just a question of landowners signing individual leases?

Its been awhile since I saw it. maybe it had something to do with changing zoning laws for drilling. The oil companies and politicians are rolling over the public in North Texas who are trying to exercise some control over fracking. The people are complaining about earthquakes from injection wells of waste water, polluted ground water and laws which allow the companies to reuse to say what chemicals are being dumped.

Every objection is met with we will sue you and win because we OWN Texas courts and judges. Screw you.

I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else

In the movie, the town vote was supposed to be some generic blanket ban on fraking.

In real life, the town vote wouldn't hold water in state supreme court since it came after lease agreements were signed and would get railroaded.
