Two thoughts ...

1. Good movie.

2. A title so stupid that no one will watch it.

hahaha i was actually just going to make a topic saying pretty much the same things. the title really isn't helping it and honestly it's barely relevant to the story if at all.

also, this is the first time i can remember that i didn't hear the title of a film actually spoken during it.

i did like it though and i feel like the low rating so far is partially due to the title which is unfortunate.

Wait ... you're saying people vote on a film based on its title?

Is there any possible way that a film with "Hipster" in the title would be appealing, short of "Hipster Holocaust" or something? Even that sounds pretty horrible.

Still, I'm debating checking this out at my local theater. It's a single-screen, so I don't have to repeat the title, which would be a dealbreaker.

reply

I think the title refers to the area where they filmed this. Lots of hipsters in North Park.

I ended up enjoying the movie as a character study, but from the title, I thought it would be more of a parody of the San Diego underground art and music scene, which there is a lot of. But the music is usually more avant garde than what is in the movie, at least what I like.

But in saying that, the family story was the main point and that does its job.

I am not sure what else you would name the movie. Any ideas?

What was the song he played at the school? "Black" somethingorother? Pick a name like that.

reply

Agreed on both counts. Big mistake with that title for sure.

I think it is a good title.
He was surrounded by hipsters but he wasn't one.
And while speaking in anger about "art" he set a line between his work-music and the art-wanna-be stuff that hipsters do.
I'm not saying that what he did was incredible art. But at least it was true. It wasn't a fart.

Remember back in 2011 when being hipster was the 'in thing'. They probably chose the title so that it attracts these 'hipsters' to watch it. Hipsters, as you know, do not call themselves 'hipsters' because it's too cliché. In a way, saying that he wasn't a hipster actually is him saying he is one. I don't know if that makes sense hahaha but yeah, hipsters don't admit they're hipsters. So that means,he is actually a proud hipster. Hahahah. Anyway, the movie was da bomb! I have never been so touched by a hairy, sad looking, musical genius before. Kudos!

I really like Destin Daniel Cretton's films.
Short term 12 is such a great film

reply

Yeah I've googled I Am Not A Hipster and Term 12 was listed at the suggestions. I'll definitely watch it soon!

From the waytooindie <dot> com website/review (re: the title) ~ for what it's worth 

"...I Am Not a Hipster is the exact phrase that a stereotypical hipster in denial often proclaims; it is a bizarre paradox that exists to somehow validate the fact someone is actually a hipster. The title is significant because Brook is in denial of his true self and emotions; therefore, until he is able to accept these things, he is doomed for failure. The reason why the film succeeds while similar ones do not (such as The Comedy), is because it does not write off the hero as a hipster who is ungrateful simply because the counter-culture tells him to, the film gives explanations as to why he acts the way he does. The film places emphases on the grieving process which allows the audience to sympathize with the flawed character instead of resenting him..."
