Could've been so much better, but budget a lack of experience hurt it

I heard about this movie because they kept playing an interview with Kevin Smith on the OnDemand channel. While Kevin's directing career has gone in the toilet, he does seem to have decent taste. So I figured this movie had to be pretty good.

Now the movie is very low budget and I'm guessing all the actors have little to no experience. So did Clerks and tha movie still holds up pretty well. The difference, Clerks had a way better script.

I have three major problems with this movie. First, it felt like too much of the movie is improvised. Now I don't know if it was or not, but it felt like it. Lots of rambling and going on too long. I think smarter writing would've helped the acting.

Second, I thought the Charlie storyline hurt the movie. I get that his scenes build up to the end. But it seemed so unnecessary. It's not like Ferris Bueller where Rooney's day is a parallel of the teen's day, which ends with Rooney catching Ferris, but ultimately coming up short. By having Charlie find the boys, panic and shoot the hobo, it kinda ruins his story. They should've had a longer scene where Charlie thinks he's won, then accidentally shoot the hobo. It just didn't work for me. It's like the montage where we did the one kid smoking crack and Charlie is shooting in the woods. I didn't see the need of that. Why was Charlie taking his clothes off and all? They needed to either make him way more crazy or cut him out.

Lastly, I get that it's a comedy. And comedy works with misunderstandings and stupid characters. But these kids were retarded. They didn't know how to use a pregnancy test? It's only been in hundreds of movies. They didn't know women have eggs? The one kid gets in a car and is like "What are those rocks you're smoking?" "Crack, want some?" "Okay." I'm paraphrasing, but that's basically what happens. So he didn't know what crack is? Then the one guy makes him perform oral sex on him. And the kid is like "Okay." No resistance. No, "Get the hell out of here" or "I'm not doing that." He does it. At that point you think, well maybe he's just really messed up and doesn't know what he's doing. But at the end he's like "I blew a guy and I have to deal with that." So he knew what he was doing. And in the end, they just been through a crazy time. They saw a hobo shot in front of them, the one kid smoked crack and blew a guy, but they are happy and carefree, like they were in the beginning of the movie. They should've been a little more in shock or broken.

It's an ok movie. I'd like to see what they do next, with a bigger budget.
