This game made me stop hating the wii remote.

seriously, i think ill give all those other games i got for christmas/bought with giftcards and havnt played since last january another try after this. i HAD to buy and play this one because its zelda, and now i think maybe i gave up on those other ones too soon.

though the characters are all a bit blah blah blah blah blah blah wordy, but then thats true with all the zelda games.. and that sword spirit robot whatever reminds me painfully of that annoying pest navi... and i really hate flying so far(or rather i hated chasing that stupid yellow bird around in that first race)...
everything else is crazy awesome.

The combat is unlike anything else I have played. Just like you I had a wii for awhile but never really played it, and was waiting for a new Zelda for awhile, and has it ever delivered. Timing your strikes and watching the enemies block in different directions is a motion-control dream, and other games on other platforms should take note, this is how you do motion control for a "hardcore" game. Zelda has always been industry leading, and now it sets a new bar for intuitive, "this just makes sense" motion controls for an adventure game. I agree flying is tough at first (especially the race), but it is much easier the more I use the bird. I'm only in the first temple, and can't wait to see what's in store for the boss fights, I'm sure they will be some of the best all time in any game.

Games like skyrim, dark souls, and ninja gaiden should take note, they could all benefit from siilar schemes given playstation move's closeness to wii motion plus.

One wii game I would suggest picking up that does motion controls justice is Resident Evil 4, if you haven't played it.

Have you played Red Steel 2 yet? If so, how does the combat compare?

Red Steel 2 isn't nearly as good as the first one. The reason the first one was so good is because it was mainly as shooter, with sword fights against bosses. But RS2 is mainly sword fights with the option to use guns, which suck. It gets really monotonous after a few hours as well.

Wha!? The first one has only two things it does better than the second: A Multiplayer, and a better ending. I was trying to determine if the sword combat in Skyward Sword was as good as Red Steel 2's.

It's a HUGE improvement over Twilight Princess in the controls alone. Though it claimed to be motion-control, Twilight Princess just had you waving the remote however you wanted to swipe your sword. Now the direction in which you wave the remote matters, and I love the use of the nunchuck for the shield. It leads to forming actual STRATEGIES in defeating enemies, something motion-control needs a lot more of. The WiiMotion Plus also helps a great deal in the sensitivity and subtlety in the movements. Although I wasn't a huge fan of what flying segments, or the skydiving I have come across, I still appreciated the controls and the way the remote works towards your flying or descent. I'm not far into the game yet, but I'm already hooked.

It's funny how the Wii's been out for over half a decade now, yet this is one the first instances I thoroughly enjoyed the motion-control experience. This game gives me hope for such control schemes.
