What Films Do You Think Will Be Nominated for Best Picture?

The only 2 I can think of are:

- The Help (Token White Guilt Film)
- Anonymous (Token Period Piece Film)
- The Debt (Token War Film)

reply

I really hope that Drive is nominated, easily the best film of the year so far...

Do you understand the words that are a coming out of my mouth?

reply

Oh and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, Pt. 2 (I Think Will Win best Picture)

reply

War Horse. And that chinese Christian Bale movie "Flowers of War", if they can somehow release it before Oscar season. If Harry Potter gets nominated, I'll fricken BARF.

reply

War Horse i hope gets nominated for cinematography

"The Artist" War Horse, The Descendants

I can't tell what's stupider. The fact that OP thinks that Anonymous and The Debt will be nominated or that this tard thinks Harry Potter will win Best Picture.

I'm putting money on War Horse.

SHOW ME POTATO SALAD!

reply

I think:
The Help
Midnight in Paris
J. Edgar
& Moneyball

of the movies I've seen. Haven;t seen War Horse yet but think it'll get nominated.

reply

J Edgar got awful reviews.

I know it wont happen, but I hope "The Help" is NOT nominated for one of the ten best films. I'll take almost any film over it except for Twilight. If it comes down to Twilight and The Help, then I'll suck it up and keep my fingers crossed for The Help.

I'm hoping to see The Artist in Best Picture and not just best Foreign Picture, and most of the pictures I would like to see are Independent films (Drive, Shame, etc.), not the big blockbusters so I would love to see what transpires here.

Happy Holidays and have a wonderful 2012!

reply

The only movie I care about getting the nomination is Drive and I think it's still possible.

reply

The Artist cannot be accepted into the Best Foreign Picture category; that category is reserved not for films made outside the US, but for films in which most of the dialog is not in English. That's why British films are never nominated. In 2008, The Band's Visit, which is probably one of the top 5 Israeli films of all time, was rejected by the Academy for that reason: the film is all about an encounter between a group of Israelis and a group of Egyptians, and they talk to each other mainly in English.

The Artist will almost certainly be nominated for Best Picture, and has a strong chance of winning. I don't think it deserves the award (Drive is a better picture by far) but it'll still be nice to see an unusual and independent film win.

No mention of Melancholia? screw you all.

reply

Melancholia sucked BIG time. Very boring film. I personally wasn't that impressed with Drive, but it may well get nominated. Ryan Gosling is hot property this year.

I think:

Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy
Moneyball
The Ides of March
My Week With Marilyn
The Iron Lady

Just a wild guess.

I'd love to see a small independent like The Guard get nominated, or Take Shelter with the gorgeous Jessica Chastain who also has had a great year.

reply

I actually don't understand why people got bored with the film, it wasn't very long itself. The visuals caught me the whole time. And the ending... amazing.

Just for the record: The Tree of Life, for me, was sooo boring.

reply

It does not deserve a nomination, simple as that. ;)

A Separation (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1832382/)
The Artist (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1655442/)
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1201607/)
The Tree of Life (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478304/)
The Descendants (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1033575/)
Hugo (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0970179/)
Drive (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780504/)
War Horse (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1568911/)
Midnight in Paris (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1605783/)
Moneyball (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1210166/)

The others that I think could make the way into the list:

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1340800/)
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1568346/)
Warrior (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1291584/)
The Ides of March (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1124035/)
A Dangerous Method (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1571222/)
The Help (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1454029/)
Melancholia (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1527186/)
The Debt (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1226753/)
Anonymous (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1521197/)
Shame (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1723811/)
J. Edgar (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1616195/)
Young Adult (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1625346/)
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0477302/)
The Muppets (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1204342/)

It's not easy, because there at least 15 movies that I think deserve to be nominated. I'm not a movie expert, so I don't know too much what are the Academy 's criteria or something, But I know for sure that there will be a lot of people complaining about the nominees and after that the winner. In the past few years I saw th best picture winners from, I would say, 1965, but it never influenced me to not like other films. My favourite movies are: Amadeus, Inception, Pan's Labyrinth, The Godfather, The Dark Knight, Pulp Fiction, Amélie, Shindler's List, The Polar express and the most of Pixar animations ...(sure there is something I left out). For the Oscars, I hope the best film wins.

Warrior should not only be nominated, it should be one of the front-runners to win Best Picture, it's just so good. Hugo was pretty great as well.

reply

Warrior, Drive, Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Midnight in Paris, and The Descendants are locks.

reply

that should be the end of the list imo. but then again I haven't yet seen The Artist, Shame, or Melancholia so I could add a few. I just don't see the point of nominating 10 movies if there aren't 10 that legitimately deserve it.

reply

The Descendants is the only lock out of those. And Warrior DEFINITELY won't be nominated.

reply

[deleted]

OMG man, I tought I missed something... yes, Warrior should be on the list as well

reply

it's such a weak year for film. at this point, there should be at least one or two films in the lead and locked, carrying themselves all the way to the Oscars'. the nominations for best actor and actress are weak as well (aside from Meryl and Glenn). I had my hopes up for Elizabeth Olsen and numerous other actors to be nominated but celebrities like George Clooney and Brad Pitt are getting praises for essentially playing themselves. This year's nominees are very Hollywood. What happened to the Oscars' being meant to recognize art-house films? there are good performances, but nominations are different for every awards this year as well; it's just all over the place. so far, as i see, these films are locked:

Best Picture:
Moneyball (Brad Pitt and the writing)
Hugo (Martin Scorsese' first family film and well, it's Martin Scorsese)
War Horse (The director)
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (deserving nod)
The Help (Box office success)
The Ides of March (George Clooney)
The Descendants (George Clooney)
Midnight in Paris (most deserving)
?
?

Films that should be considered for Best Picture with great performances to follow:

Shame (with Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress)
Martha Marcy May Marlene (with Best Actress)
The Artist
Like Crazy (with Best Actress)
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (with Best Actor)
Drive
Young Adult (with Best Actress)
Super 8 (with Best Supporting Actress)

reply

From least to most likely...

10. Ides of March
9. Drive
8. Extremely Loud
7. The Descendants
6. Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
5. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
4. The Help
3. Hugo
(1) The Artist, Midnight in Paris

I don't think Warhorse will win, or be nominated based on the hokey story. It was a beautiful movie, but wasn't that strong of a story. I do think it will win something though. Also, don't know if it will matter but "A Separation" is getting incredible reviews, but it's foreign, and i think it will win that category over best picture.

reply

[deleted]

Thank you for saying Super 8 for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress. You are one of the only people on these boards who agrees with me that that was much more than a technical film and deserves nods in the bigger categories. I agree strongly with Best Supporting Actress, as for me it was 200 times better than Janet McTeer, Berenice Bojo, and Shailene Woodley who people are saying was the snub in that category.

reply

I think that beside what you guys said, Melancholia and Tree of life have a decent chance...
Warrior for best picture? Are you kidding me? Nick Nolte maybe... for best supporting actor.
And there is no way Harry Potter will be nominated for best picture...

reply

Warrior definitely deserves to be nominated, but I have a nagging suspicion that won't happen. Nonetheless it's my favorite film of the year, hands down.
Other than that, I'm rooting for Drive.

I can't go to a bad movie by myself. What, am I gonna make sarcastic remarks to strangers?
