it was about the affair

She would have been just as confused due to the lie about her father, not the race thing. The race issue forced the truth to come out. Why didn't her parents have other children. There is more to this story.

I agree. The mother even said "if you weren't black I would've gotten away with it". There was a whole lot more going on than just the race thing, particularly with the mother....the mother said a lot of interesting things.

Dear Vorenus, I don't **** your wife.

Yeah that mother, damn. When she said that...well it just proved that she would have kept up the lie if she could have. She didn't learn much of anything. And when she said, what would she do differently...I get the point that she can't totally regret the affair because she got her daughter out of it. BUT what about maybe just being more honest with the husband? She could have done that, maybe.

Not trying to throw stones though. Who knows her own background and what their marriage was like.

But the line "I could have gotten away with it..." is bad thing to say to Lacey too because it still implies that her existence is what helped ruin things in the family.

You can see the hurt in Lacey's face when her mother said that.

In case you're wondering, I'm female.

Once more, I'm in agreement with you. I understand growing up feeling like a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. I get it. That mother destroyed that family, all by herself. By keeping it secret, she implied shame....made Lacey ashamed, made Robert ashamed. I think Lacey is so beautiful, she should feel PROUD. SHE IS A GORGEOUS GIRL.
I wish race hadn't even been brought into the picture. It makes me feel ill.

No, that is not what Lacey’s mother said. She said, “The fact is, if the man with whom I had an affair hadn’t been black, none of this would have come out.”

Yes, ultimately it means the same thing (because, quite frankly, the mother did try to “get away with it,” and lied about it—especially to herself). However, she wasn’t so cold as to use the words, “gotten away with it” to her daughter. She showed more care and feeling than that.
