Holy *beep* Have you seen the trailer??

I was watching the blooper reel for The Artist on some French website, and after the video was over, a new trailer with Jean Dujardin came on. My mother and my younger brother, who were watching it with me, thought, "Hey, why not? It's Jean Dujardin!" As the trailer progressed, we found out how incredibly RAUNCHY and PORN-LIKE the TRAILER was! I actually had to close the window as soon as we saw the first bit of nudity.

We see two of the characters in the doggystyle position (with the female's rear end clearly visible), we see bare breasts in two different scenes, and we see a full-out naked orgy with nothing left behind.

Don't get me wrong; I appreciate porn just as much as the next guy, but come on! Aren't there even ratings in France?

reply

Yes, they are ratings delivered by a "Commission de classification des œuvres cinématographiques".
You have seen this trailer on Internet, there is no censorship on Internet (for the moment). But when it'll be broadcast on TV, I presume they will put on the bottom of the screen a sign "-12" (or "-16" if it's just erotic, or "-18" if it's fully pornographic)
In France, we are more "nit-picking" about violence in films than about nudity or profanity. Cultural gap...

Jesus... Grow up, will you!

"Jesus... Grow up, will you!"

I beg you pardon?

reply

Sorry, not you ddx-5, I was talking to the original poster...

" As the trailer progressed, we found out how incredibly RAUNCHY and PORN-LIKE the TRAILER was! I actually had to close the window as soon as we saw the first bit of nudity."

Why? Is nudity something lethal? Will you or your children DIE if you see some BREASTS???

"We see two of the characters in the doggystyle position (with the female's rear end clearly visible), we see bare breasts in two different scenes, and we see a full-out naked orgy with nothing left behind."

There's no orgy in the film or the trailer. Nothing "porn-like"... Have you EVER seen porn? Les Infidèles is a brilliant sketch comedy about infidelity, inspired by the Italian comedies from the seventies (films by Dino Risi for instance). Of course they have some sex scenes in it! How do you make a film called "Les Infidèles", about infidelity and not have sex in it?... I despise those notions of "PG-13" and the fact that it's a whole story when an actress like Jennifer Aniston is supposed to be naked (but ultimately isn't) in one of her movies or the whole Janet Jackson "Nipplegate".

Who doesn't like breasts?

I've never understood America's problems with onscreen nudity and the childlike ways it deals with the subject. Nudity won't kill you. Violence and voting for right-wing idiots will.

Most serious social problem for America. Pathetic.

I watched the movie trailer on a tv show and it was nothing like that. Quite ordinary apart from an used condom on a dog`s mouth. Then again, it's not a movie for kids.

Anyway, welcome to european cinema. Funny how adults care much more about nudity than kids. For them it's something natural as it should be for everyone.

reply

The film has been rated "U" in France - Suitable for all ages.

Rating systems in Europe differ from the American one, in that they are much more concerned with violence than with nudity or sex or language. In America, it's the other way round.

reply

Americans, Americans...... they have no problem with graphic violence, but for the love of god, never show them nipples or simulated sex ...it's porn ,it's offensive, it's the devil!! Here in Europe people are much more comfortable with such stuff, they are not so prude....difference of cultures i guess.

reply

Hey, I personally don't have a problem with it either. It's just that (as you said), here it's a different thing. Nudity and sex are just not something that people here prefer to watch in the company of their mother and 14-year-old brother.

I have no problem with nudity at all. My only concern is the trailer, because the reason it has been rated 18 in France is the nudity and sex. In America, there are two types of trailers: greenband and redband. Greenband is the one that has been approved for all audiences. Redband is the one that is on the level of the film (including sex, nudity, and violence).

So your point is, we should put censorship on the internet???!!! Seriously?

People here wouldn't wanna watch a film with sexual content with their kid or younger sibling either!! What does that have to do with anything?

PARENTS/adults are responsible as to what their kids should or shouln't watch! If they are incapable of doing that, it's their fault! We can't restrain every freedom we have in arts, music, films, internet etc IN CASE a kid watches because the parent didn't do his job!

You blush in the sight of a naked human being or in the sight of sex, as if it isn't the most natural thing in the world! I do it, you do it, we all do it, yet for some people it's the red flag! What's the big deal?
That's why i say that your culture is much more puritanic! If we follow your logic , the trailers for every horror/splatter movie should be illegal, in case you make a mistake and watch it with your kid!?

But even with kids you have double standards! In America sex is more taboo than violence! A kid in California for example can LEGALLY watch this happen to Sonya: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XUmEWnw4ZM&feature=player_embedded , but if there was a nipple thrown in there, it would suddenly become XXX rated and everyone would freak out!

As i said, it's a difference of cultures! And of course i'm not saying everyone in America is like that! But there is a general tendency!

reply

No. I don't think we're properly communicating. I don't think the internet should be censored. I just think there should be some sort of warning to let people know that there's going to be nudity or violence, etc. in the trailer they're about to see.

I also never said I supported graphic violence in films. I originally saw that Mortal Kombat clip on The Daily Show, and I was utterly disgusted. It's unbelievable that something which glorifies the destruction of humans is so much more available to kids than something which glorifies making humans. Again (and I can't stress this enough), I don't find sex taboo when it's being talked about around teenagers or adults. The act of seeing it in action with family without warning though is a little shaking.

I'm not American, mind you.

I think what the OP's trying to say is it's more a matter of knowing up front what you're going to see. If it had had an NC-17 rating on it in the intro, he'd have watched it later, probably. It was certainly NSFW (which is where I opened it -- luckily my boss didn't see it).

I understand your argument, but I think you're overreacting to what the OP said (or intended to).

reply

Old post I know just funny to see this still going on.

I'm in the US and one simple fact will make this situation make a lot more sense.

Something along the lines of 70%+ of the US is religious and or "Christian" in belief.

Only around 40%+ of the UK and it goes down considerably in most other European countries as well as in Asia.

Arguably the fact that within the confines of religious views, sex is considered sacred or private, it stands to reason a highly religious nation is going to find it objectionable in media.

However, keep in mind this is personal opinion, given the rather violent nature of religion as well as it's texts, it again stands to reason that a few centuries for the US to ingrain that violence is ok means it's viewed less harshly.

Just my .02

I "love" the replies you are getting in this thread, mocking you for being a prudish American who has a problem with nudity.
Hey morons:
The guy clearly stated he has no problem with nudity. And, guess what, I don't have a problem with nudity, either. We just have standards for behavior and social conduct.
Now, I went to see this in the theater and laughed and went home and had no problems with the nudity in the film.
But the OP was describing a situation in which he expected to click on a trailer cleared for general viewing and instead saw doggystyle nudity when he was sitting with his mother and younger brother. Some people consider that awkward.
And some people don't want to expose their kids to graphic sexual content because they realize that what is acceptable for adults is not acceptable for children.

So spare me your condescending preaching. If for no other reason than it is boring as *beep* (don't blame me for the censorship of that last word, vulgarity-lovers, I had no choice).
