Why is this show doing so badly?

This show never had amazing ratings, but it was enough to warrant a full season pick up. I guess some people find the subject matter controversial, but even it's core audience appears to be chipping off. TVbythenumbers now predicts this show is certain to be cancelled by May. And I can't put my finger on it. I didn't notice any decline in quality or change in style.

The Voice lead-in was taken away from the Go On, which caused it's ratings to spiral. Which in turn caused The New Normal to decrease in ratings as well. NBC should have put both shows on hiatus, and waited for The Voice to return.

What are you on about?!?

TNN and Go On had artificially high ratings when they followed The Voice. People weren't tuning in to watch either one, they were tuning it to The Voice and then leaving the channel on NBC. When The Voice went on break, those millions of people who only watched the two sitcoms because the TV was already on stopped watching. Hence the sharp drop in viewership of both shows.

ooh ok, it makes more sense now, thanks.

There's a good chance people were watching and hoping to see improvements. Some shows start off a bit rocky and then get really good after they find a groove. This show hasn't really done that. It's already stagnating and there doesn't seem to be a great reason to watch it. The content and characters aren't all that funny or original. It's just a preacher version of Modern Family that isn't nearly as funny.

At least that's why we aren't going to watch it anymore.

I think its becoming less and less funny and thats why people are tuning out. They want a sitcom, not this soap opera its turning into. The first few eps were so amusing, mostly due to Nene Leakes and Ellen Barkin but now Ellen's character barely appears.

I'd like to see her on every episode, too, but maybe it's hard to come up with excuses for her to barge into Bryan and David's place every week.

I really like the show and I'm hoping it'll pick up some new fans during the summer reruns. After it won that People's Choice Award, and given Murphy's track record for creating popular shows, I even thought it might become the flagship to bring NBC back from the abyss.

Ellen Barkin was the main reason I watched. I am becoming less and less interested with the show when she isn't on.
