Completely agree. An excellent, thought provoking film with a really unique style. Grim, though.

But why did it end so abruptly? Did I miss something? He was crying on the phone, she asked him where he was, and then his eyes snapped open and he stopped crying and that was it. Was great for me right up until then.

Final narration line (in case you've missed): "This is where the icy cold asphalt and even colder bodies tumble about together. The place called 'the world.'"

His crying to me was a form of redemption. Letting out all those years of pain, abuse, cowardness through his tears. And his silence after the call was like a moment of clarity for the protagonist, after keeping his feelings buried beneath the surface for so long. Not at all a happy ending but i'm glad it ended this way. The ending scene does hint at some optimism though. Masterful film making.

Wherever you enjoyed The King of Pigs or not, it certainly is a film you will not quickly forget. I read The King of Pigs is a critique on South Korean society in terms of pressuring individuals into social norms. This does make sense in context of the narrative, though I felt it should have been expanded upon. For example, Jong-suk referred to his family being poor, yet it is not built upon within the narrative. If it had been, then The King of Pigs may have had a stronger narrative.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

I'm surprised too, that there weren't more threads and posts about this depressing, pessimistic, but authentic film. I gave it a 10, and a rave review.

It's brutal but honest, though I long for a redemptive finish and didn't want it to end for Chul this way, even though it was powerful.

Too much hanging in the air, I wish there are clearer subplots, eg why was his wife killed in the beginning?

I liked when 'crybaby' guy loses it towards the end and starts stuttering during his monologue recalling the last day of school. The voice acting was very good. The film itself is truly depressing and you have to wonder what the writer has been through in his youth, it's interesting that the main character is himself a writer.
