American version of Spy

Apparently an American remake of this show is being discussed with ABC.. Any news on that?
And what do you guys think about the idea?

reply

I think it would be great if it came over here, but I'm sure that it would get screwed up like almost everything else that they try to bring over here.

It is exactly why the show Episodes is so spot on. "Let's buy that British show that everyone likes and take everything out that makes it work over there and make it a hit over here."

Why doesn't an American network just buy and show the BBC version of something that works instead of always trying to "improve" it.

Ugh

Episodes is one of the most brilliant satires of Hollywierd since Blake Edwards' "SOB." The best part was bringing back Jurgen proknow who was sadly absent since playing Paul's off-the-wall brother on "Mad About You." I still haven't forgiven them what they did to "Cracker" and "Life on Mars."

reply

Unfortunately, it looks like the American version is already headed off the rails. ABC wants to hire Ken Jeong if Community is cancelled, but not to play Chris (where he'd be perfect) or even Philip (pretty good there too). They want to cast him as The Examiner.

What's the point of making an American version when Spy is already practically Chuck...

reply

Besides the series is already syndication ready. It has 16 episodes plus a behind the scenes episode. But I will say this, Spy is way better than Chuck, but I don't think there was any attempt to copy it.

You are only limited by your own imagination.

muddmaxx - Chuck is so close to being a remake of the original Get Smart its not even funny, so few original ideas out there now a days that they would probably get crushed by all the remakes.

BTW - I think Chuck is an amazing series.

-only uneducated minds are not open to any ideas other than their own.

This show is nothing at all like Chuck except they are both accidental spies. Chuck has 1 redeeming element the blonde girlfriend. Everything else is horrible especially the eye roll stuff when he goes in to his trance or whatever that is- can't be bothered to try to remember.

Spy has a very deep cast all of them are excellent the writing is great, the thread about Marcus is genius and the comedy is incredible.

Anyhow two entirely different shows.

reply

Actor Rob Cordry has been cast as Tim Everett (not Elliott), a guy who inadvertently joins the Secret Service when he tries to better himself in the eyes of his son.

reply

F that. Just bring back the same show, this was pure gold.

reply

Sadly, ABC has passed on the pilot.

reply

Good. They'd just F it up. Let "Spy" develop a larger cult following and keep it away from traditional American TV's "idiot-izing" of foreign entertainment.

reply

oh god.. 1st bad news - Not renewed for a 3rd season.. 2nd bad news - my fellow americans are copying it! AHHHHHHHHHH I should have never checked this Forum!

I love Tim! I only watched Spy because of how great he was in "Whites" He's also in Dirk Gently Detective Agency.. I really like his acting / character. I don't know if any show will be nearly the same w/ out him.

reply

It already was made. It was called Get Smart.
