What I liked and didn't like about this movie... *spoilers*

Liked:

- Power armor designs. Yeah, I know it doesn't resemble the book, but I don't care.
- Trig was hot! That little wink she gave whats-his-name in the locker room was sexy as hell.
- The lasers on the ships were cool.
- I know this is subjective like crazy, but I liked the voice acting. It was nice to hear David Matranga again.

Disliked:

- My biggest problem with the movie was that all the action took place IN A SPACESHIP! I hate that! I hated it when the first Alien did it, I hated it when Metroid did it (twice!), and I hated it now. One thing I loved so much about the "Roughnecks" TV series was they went to so many different planets with so many different terrains and climates.
- Lack of bug variety. There were only Warriors, a few Plasmas, and a Queen. I understand it is because of the spaceship setting (argh), but it still annoys me. Again, I refer to the "Roughnecks" series to give you huge enemy variety.
- Should Rico really still be hitting on Carmen like that? A General dating a Captain, maaaaaaaan if the Terran Federation has anything like the U.S. code of military justice... lol.
- The entire plot felt very detached from the overall Bug War. I know finding an enemy Queen is a big deal, but at the end of the day, 90% of the film was just clearing out an infested spaceship.
- Lack of special features on the disc, but that's a minor gripe.

Most of my dislikes are pretty minor. Overall, I thought it was pretty good. I'd watch it again.

In a way I kinda agree with your dislikes, although I didn't like that one warrior bug at the end wandering in a tunnel on Earth, extremely pointless.

But I got to give the Queen Bug credit for that whole hijacking ship plan she had to get to Earth, it was as clever as the Queen in Roughnecks sending decoy Transport Bugs all over the place.

All in all I felt a bit of closure they were able to kill the Queen at the end of this movie because Roughnecks really left me stagnated leaving on a cliffhanger, since they did not kill the Queen on Earth nor fought off the huge bug invasion that was approaching. I think this movie made up for that.

Makes me even wonder if the War is really over since the Queen is dead.

reply

I dunno, this film made it seem like the Queen was just one of many. I agree with what you say about Roughnecks, maaaan they desperately needed to finish those last three episodes.

In Roughnecks, the Bugs only had one Queen, but it seemed like in this movie there was supposed to be more? It just felt really coincidental that the Fort Casey colony happened to be built right where a Queen was...

BTW, I just found out the voice actors for Trig and Bugspray are married in real life, lol. It's always funny when the fictional characters in a relationship are mirroring their own real-life situations.

reply

That's interesting that Trig and Bugspray's actors are married in real life, how ironic.

Well the Fort Casey thing has been discussed before, me I believe they captured the Queen Bug elsewhere and brought her to Fort Casey which was a research facility already built on that asteroid, but then she got loss and spawned many warrior bugs that led to the infestation.

I enjoyed this movie myself, and kind of agree with OP and other posters comments in the likes and dislikes of Invasion.

I mean, it would've been neat if Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer and Neil Patrick Harris would've reprised their roles from first film via voiceovers and created a stronger sense of continuity to the first movie. But i thought the film besides the shiny nice CGI was alright and stands on its own as a good film. Its just a pity the film lacked the; "wartime newsreels" style cut-ins the other films had, which is why besides animating this Starship Troopers movie it felt more like a different movie barring the name tie-in etc.

And yes i agree with what others have said, perhaps any sequel might follow and complete the TV series "Roughnecks" storyline!

Til then support this new release so that may happen in the near future!

Dina Meyer sadly could not reprise her role from ST1 as her character died in that movie.

Think he meant Denise Richards.

You know what I REALLY didn't like? how ineffective the military was. I know it's suppossed to be a major point in the first movie, a deliverate criticism to the fascist militaristic state they live in, but here it was just sloppy writing. 3 ships can't handle another one controlled by a bug. A space station stands idle at said spaceship ramming it. It fires only once and the bugship dodges it. Then the station fires 4 nukes on the now grounded bugship, one next to the other, only to have them wiped by a single shot. We have now more efficient nukes than this ones.

They go too far to make the bugs a more compelling foe, it's quite a rather bland villain if this was written with a bit more logic.

I get the impression the John A Warden is something of a Dreadnaught type ship compared to the usual variety. Would make sense that a captain as well respected as Carmen would be in charge of it. If you look, it's clearly much larger than the others and filled with much heavier weaponry. The three that lost may be outdated, or not actually designed for combat. If I recall, this is the first time we have ever seen the federation ships fire on anything but bug meteors.

As for the space station (Sanctuary? Don't recall if it was specifically named), they only get in one shot before the John A Warden goes inside minimum range because Johnnie choked and didn't want to fire on a ship with Carmen in it. Had he attacked as soon as the other three ships were gone, they probably would have done a much better job.

The nukes? Yeah you're right. I personally thought the biggest offence was how we get this huge moment of awesome when a full squad of marauders are dropping on the ship, and all but Johnny are wiped out before even touching the ground. The film made a huge deal out of the attack, but gave a very weak payoff and made the marauder armor seem virtually useless. Especially when the armor in ST3 completely OWNED the bugs.

When I don't like a movie, I usually don't spend too much time on it's boards.
