Setting confusion

I must have missed something. Why are people assuming that it's set in USA? While I was watching it, my mind just thought is was some unnamed, non specific European mountain country. They spoke English for two obvious reasons; 1) so that everyone sounded like they were from the same non-specific place, and 2) so we didn't need subtitles.

They also spoke English on Tatooine. What US state is that? The Hobbits spoke English in The Shire? Washington perhaps? They spoke English in Star Trek. Could that be New York?

it instantly struck me as the mountains in the eastern us. something like west virginia or something. of course they probably wanted it to be vague just like they meant for there to be hardly a dozen words spoken throughout the entire movie. who knows. maybe the makers released the info somewhere online.

Your knowledge of U.S. geography is inadequate. There are no mountains anywhere east of the Rockies that begin to compare with those in the film. They are clearly the Alps -- not one of their most spectacular areas but still alpine -- as are the meadows and the buildings shown. I would guess it was filmed in Austria but it might have been in Switzerland.

ok now the accents are a dead givaway that its america. as well as the fact that guns are so commonplace. i've heard stories from ppl from west virginia about how anything goes in those mountains sometimes, and some mountain man hillbilly can just carry off a woman caveman style. the architecture, livestock, and cars seem to also indicate this. obviously it COULD be the mountains in the west but i doubt it. i also noticed a lot of the water seems cerulean blue which is indicative of volcanic minerals, if that's any hint.

I assumed it was in or around the Swiss Alps. I was surprised they spoke English though, instead of using subtitles. Beautiful scenery btw.

It's filmed in the Ischgl area in Tirol, Austria.

I like this location (from watching the movie, I mean).

The setting is ambiguous.

The confusion comes from the fact that this was a poorly contrived film. The setting is so obviously that of the alps, and both the architecture and cows support this. However, all of the characters spoke in a variety of southern US accents. No American is going to believe this was filmed in the US, and I would even wager that most non-Americans wouldn't believe it either, since the alps have such an iconic look. Ultimately, it boils down to the fact that the director is an idiot, and I don't think it's just a coincidence that his last name happens to be blunder!
