Nose Dive, San Junipero and USS Callister are the best episodes. The rest of the series is mostly trash.

Unfortunately.

From my observations, whenever people talk about Black Mirror, they usually mean Nosedive. Which showed us a disturbing, and soon to be true, dark side of social medias. This is the episode that defined the series and left a lasting impression when it arrived on Netflix.

I agree that the 3 mentioned episodes are great... but there are many more good episodes like: 'White Bear', 'Shut up and Dance', 'Hang the DJ', 'Black Museum', 'White Christmas' (maybe my favorite), 'The Entire History of you', 'Be right back', 'Playtest', '15 Million Merits'...

I also like what episodes like 'The National Anthem', 'Arkangel' & 'Crocodile' are trying to say... but maybe the execution wasn't great...

San Junipero and USS Callister are by far the best imo but the rest is not trash.

reply

Nah, San Junipero and USS Callister are overrated as fvck! The Entire History of You, White Christmas, Nosedive, and Hated in the Nation are by far the best.

reply

How are they overrated?

reply

I'm glad you asked.

San Junipero was an OK concept with some genuinely moving moments, but overall too slow paced, melodramatic and pretentious to warrant repeat viewings.

USS Callister felt too 'Hollywood' for a Black Mirror episode, was predictable, most of the characters that we're supposed to like and root for weren't very likable - and while Daley is definitely a troubled character who goes about his problems the wrong way, I didn't buy that we're supposed to see him as a villain who deserves his comeuppance at the end.

How these episodes receive the overwhelming amount of praise that they do is beyond me.

reply

How? well probably because those people praising it don't agree with what you're saying here. Still don't see how it's overrated just because you don't like it. For one Daley definitely deserved the fate he received. The fact that he cloned a bunch of his co workers then proceeded to treat all of them like trash, turning them into monsters when they didn't play along with his little game, removing their private parts? lol, and literally removing their faces. etc. The guy was a psychopath.

San Junipero was fine too.

-Research the very definition of 'overrated', then come back here.

"For one Daley definitely deserved the fate he received. -In a literal sense, the 'clones' are just digitalised replicants programmed to respond in a certain way (in this case, like Daley's co-workers). So as far as he's concerned, what he's doing is the equivalent of going home to take his frustration out on a punching bag. You think that deserves physical entrapment in the real world to the point of death by starvation/dehydration? Wow! Looks like you're the real psychopath here. And as far as the clones are concerned (as already pointed out) -with the exception of Cole and maybe Shania, all their real life counterparts are assholes (especially Walton) so I didn't root for their success in this virtual reality space -if anything, I hoped their real selves would get some form of comeuppance.

Oh, and let's not forget the ridiculousness of Cole going out of her way to break into Daley's apartment and steal his stuff just to prevent some PG-13 nudes from leaking. Like, c'mon!

"San Junipero was fine too."

Unless you can produce an argument to back this up and address the criticism I made in my previous post, I will just have to agree to disagree.

reply

Wrong, those clones were highly advanced duplicates of those people from his job. They had all the memories, mannerisms, etc that those people from the real world had at the time that he created them. So no they weren't just some programming that he had a right to treat like dirt as he did. Comparing them to a punching bag is just laughable. Just the fact alone that they were able to help put the plan together to take him out for good says a lot about how advanced they truly were.

Anyway you didn't really say anything worth discussing as far as San Junipero goes. I mean really, complaining about pacing? whatever floats your boat. I liked the episode a lot from start to finish so sure. Let's agree to disagree.

reply

It doesn't matter how "truly advanced" they were, that doesn't make them anything more than code.
And when I referred them as punching bags, I was pointing out what Daley sees them as - something he can take his anger out on. Is it the right way to go about his problems? No. But it's hardly a qualification for villainhood, more like a tragic hero.
And AS ALREADY POINTED OUT NUMEROUS TIMES, most of the work colleagues he digitally duplicated were assholes in real life and therefore their digitalised replicants were not worth rooting for. End of story!

And yes, pacing was a huge problem with San Junipero, among other things (once again, already mentioned). It's not uncommon for bad pacing to ruin otherwise good movies, such as King Kong (2005) and Man of Steel for examples. Almost nothing interesting happens for the first 40 minutes in the 60 minute episode, to the point that it felt less of a Black Mirror episode and more like a chick flick.
If that's your thing, fine, I will agree to disagree.

The Entire History of You, White Christmas, Hated in the Nation, Playtest, Be Right Back, all of these episodes for me rank from dislike to hate, but for some people they are their favorite episode. People will disagree all day which are the best and worst.

reply

If those are your worst, which ones do you think are the best?

reply

I thought 15m merits, Striking Vipers, Nosedive, The National Anthem, Shut Up and Dance, and White Bear were the best art, but there are plenty of others I liked for discussion value, social commentary, etc, or just was entertained by.

There is some grey area with episodes I don't like. Usually I just think there are glaring flaws, but other times it's the overall atmosphere and pace that brings it down. Even if there is some depth to the story, it just wasn't stimulating enough for me. I would put Be Right Back in this category, everything was kind of beige and dull.

reply

I think I enjoyed all the episodes until the last season. The last season was entirely below par.

reply

Very much so. Striking Vipers was just absolute sh*t on so many levels. Smithereens was kind of OK but it's premise was largely derivative. Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too was a decent concept ruined by poor execution, the entire third act felt like I was watching a Disney Channel Original Movie.

reply

Agreed. I was quite disappointed with the last season. And there were only three episodes. We waited a year for three subpar episodes. It pissed me off. 😩

You're not fit to judge anything.
