Men Against Fire ending?

So who the hell was the black woman he kept dreaming of and then saw at the end but she wasn't actually there?

The episode never tells who she is, and then he shows up at the end with his mind reprogrammed with his recent memories wiped, dressed in a military uniform in front of some old house, but for some reason to him it looks new and he sees that woman walking out towards him, but in reality shes not there. And he's just got tears going down his face and it ends.

Can anyone try and explain that ending? The military program just made him see the enemies as roaches, i don't get what that has to do with him going home and supposedly seeing a woman that isn't there.

I'm assuming she's a made up spouse like the made up evil roach faces/voices. With maybe with other manipulated sensations too like touch?

You know what it's like in war films, they're always like "This is my gal back home, ain't she hot?" (then usually die 😄) so they give them all a fake hot wife so they can brag with their army buddies and also give them something to fight for. They all had them because you could see the other soldiers hands twitching when he woke up which meant they were dreaming about their fake significant other.

The tears I took it as meaning that he had let himself be reprogrammed (or whatever you'd call it) but because of the light thing from the roaches it hadn't worked to the full extent as the first time and this time he was aware it was all fake and implanted even though he could see, hear and (maybe) touch it.

Yeah that makes total sense, i didn't think about it that way, thanks.

Am I correct in thinking that they got paid for Roach kills with sex dreams?
