"Playtest": Can someone explain the ending to me???

I feel a bit stupid for asking but could someone someone explain the ending to me to "Playtest"? I really like and appreciate "Black Mirror" but some of their episodes don't have fully satisfying resolutions and I kind of feel like "Playtest" was one of them.

I understand that Cooper dies at the end but did the episode explain what was going on with his mother and him? Did the cell phone interference really cause him to die? Was this supposed to be ironic? Right up to the last scene, I was getting it but then the very last bit with him being dead caught me by surprise and left me confused.

Basically his mum killed him. Ironic also that they wrote "Called Mom" on the notes, something that he was refusing to do throughout the whole episode

He'd refused to call his mum the whole show. He wanted to, clearly, but was scared to for numerous reasons.

The irony is that a call from his mum is what killed him. His biggest fear did him in

Not just that, but if he had called his mum she probably wouldn't be calling at that time and he would be alive still.
