Movies Like Episodes Of Black Mirror

Inspired by the topic 'Movies Like Black Mirror' by BlairBitchProject, & a very good alternative answer in its thread, it got me thinking of movies with similar themes/elements to particular episodes, & not necessarily technology/Sci-Fi based.

Starting with 'White Bear', for me, this has elements/reminded me of;

Shutter Island
The Running Man
Series 7: The Contenders
A Clockwork Orange

This.

We could go on and on naming basically every sci-fi movie ever made, but Ex Machina really, really feels like a Black Mirror episode.

White Bear has hints of The Purge 2

Nosedive is a mix of Bridesmaids and Stepford Wives

men against fire:
The premise is pretty common in all sorts of scifi movies/tv shows. Most recently I think it was used in "the 5th wave".
There's also a Star Trek TNG episode quite like it and I think I recall an ep of The Outer Limits (90s remake) that has the same overall premise.

"15 million merits":
reminded me slightly of "The Matrix" (at least the basic premise of using people to generate electricity, although, admittedly, that aspect is way more central in the movie than it is in this BM episode).

_____
I don't know, Butchie, instead.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Her", from 2013.

That movie is essentially a movie sized episode of Black Mirror, exploring relationships and artificial intelligence. Really recommend it!

Hello friend. That's lame, i should give you a name.

Splice and Interstellar come to mind...

but i think its important to note that the narrative structure of a one-off TV episode has some intrinsic differences than a feature film.

With a film, there is going to be more pressure to bring everything to a tidy conclusion. You can't just fade to black, with a huge *beep* and go home. Sure, its done on occasion, but it would be a novelty.

In TV, especially a show like this, the whole point is to leave them with their mouth hanging on the floor by the time the credits roll. Things don't have to be totally resolved... or you don't have to really see what happens downstream to every character. Your not emotionally involved with them.

Fight Club - For the big reveal at the end and that nothing is as it seems.

Jacob's ladder - Very close to the "man on fire" episode, although the means used to make the soldiers kill is different.

The Usual Suspects - Because by the end of the movie you question did ANYTHING you saw actually happen.

reply

Jacob's Ladder was surely playtest, the entire contents of that episode happened in 0.4 of a second as his brain died. That is the exact plot of Jacob's Ladder.

I think Idiocracy more closely mirrors the 2016 US elections.

I just watched Idiocracy for the first time about ten minutes ago. I loved it. Waldo could very well be a precursor to the world depicted in Idiocracy.
