Centuries ago, the term originally referred to people.
Centuries? Heck, the term was used to refer to people as recently as the 1950's. You can see an example of that in "Hidden Figures".
And, as this movie points out, the first non-living "computers", your electronic and mechanical devices, were originally referred to as "Turing Machines".
So, we don't have to go back all that far to find a time when that term was assigned to people.
