EDITOR'S NOTE: We've listened to your comments and thanks for sharing them. Valid points. The original headlines were an attempt to capture that films with black casts have done exceptionally well at the box office this year. Good intentions here, but unfortunately the story's message didn't translate well in the headline, so editors revised the story.

Just further confirms how ignorant the media is. I wasn't surprised.

sad. Today people still focus on race instead of humanity. just sad.

reply

This is a black movie. People should stop being so sensitive.

Yes, the cast is majority black. But what's "race-themed" about it? The film's plot has nothing to do with race

reply

well what does "race-themed" even mean?

does it mean "a movie that has a majority of non-white actors in it?"

does it mean "a movie that focuses on race relations?"

reply

race-themed means that being of a certain race is the central theme for a movie, which BMH wasn't. It's saying that the movie was all about race.
All the things that happened in this movie could've happened to white, hispanic, and Asian people.

and what film has "race" as its central theme?

i can't think of even one.

reply

12 years a slave. Boyz in the hood. Menace 2 Society.

basically, any movie that focuses on being black. Best Man Holiday does not focus on the fact that all the characters are black, therefore it is not a race-themed movie.

i'm really not gonna argue about this so you can think what you want.

12 years a slave - centers on slavery, not race. race is definitely a factor though.

boyz in the hood - is about living in the hood.

menace 2 society - same thing.

reply

12 years a slave was focused on slavery in America which was the only slavery in the world to ever enslave an entire race based solely on their skin color. So yeah, it was race based.

I said boyz in the hood and menace 2 society, because even though yes the main obstacle for the characters was living in the hood, the characters and story repeatedly brought up how living poor and being BLACK were basically intertwined. Imagine replacing the entire cast of either of those movies with poor white characters in America (and yes there are white people that are/were that poor). You can't really imagine can you?

Why? Because race was a central theme to both of those movies, especially in the dialogues. I think i even remember a line in boyz in the hood that was something like "I'm sick of being poor and black". If living in the hood was just about being poor, then what does being black have anything to do with it? Definitely race themed.

reply

yeah, i guess your points make sense if whiteness is normalized and centered.

to me, "race themed" makes no sense, because all the things you talked about from my perspective are just examples of normal, every day living, not necessarily "race."

Which race of people were the slaves?

boyz in the hood - is about living in the hood.

Which race of people lived in the "hood". Not to mention the fact that Furios who played the father of Tre (Cuba Gooding's character) constantly talked to him about growing up black in the hood

Also "The Long Walk Home", "A Time To Kill", "Do The Right Thing", "The Help", "The Butler", "Django" etc all deal with Race relations as seen through the eyes of slavery or racism.

Correction: It is a movie, which is telling the story of certain characters. Many of the characters are black. So all of the movies with white casts are white movies?
