Sy Fy low budget movies serve a useful purpose

Everyone likes to critisize the Sy Fy Channel science fiction/horror flicks for being low-budget, cheesy special effects, and boring storylines. But hey, what do you expect for free. These Sy Fy sci-fi/horror flicks serve useful purposes.

1) Entertainment for the masses.
This means mass production at economical budgeting of large numbers of quick and easy-to-produce movies for the millions of cable television viewers. We proletariat workers demand our weekly fix of television entertainment in sci fi and horror and action. Big-budget flicks require tens of millions of dollars and many months to set-up and shoot plus post-production. The Sy Fy movies cost a fraction and take only weeks to shoot.

2) Employment for up-and-coming actors and continuing employment for actors past their prime.
These Sy Fy flicks, being fast, relatively easy and relatively cheap to make on a schedule in quantity help showcase the talents of new actors. Also by bringing in actors past their prime, it helps advertise the movies. There's still a useful place and function for has-been actors or those past their prime, and I really mean it. If you're a fan of some past-their-prime actor or actress, then you're happy to see them still get acting work and appear on television.

Tis true. Some of them are total crap but some are quite entertaining and they do give a lot of out of work actors jobs. I was surprised to see Jonas Armstrong (Robin Hood) in this.

Purrrr!

Amen!

I love watching Syfy movies. Sure they are cheap with bad acting and pretty silly stories but THEY KNOW THIS and they have fun with it.

I prefer Ice Spiders or Grizzly Rage much more than a big budget Hollywood movie that takes itself seriously but really isn't any less corny or well thought out (ie. Waterworld).

Also, I prefer Alien Apocalypse over some independent film that's terrible but gets good reviews for being "artsy" (ie. Monsters).

Long live Syfy Originals!

Oh yeah we all enjoy a Dean Cain or Eric Roberts monster movie...
