Hey guys what do you think ???? will we finally get the oscar this time with Barfi ????

reply

Tragic and pathetic choice.

And then we lament our lack of wins at the Oscars in spite of being home to the largest film industry in the world.

If we’re going to send a film that so conspicuously rips off scenes from The Notebook (a Hollywood film), that tries to emulate the music and montages in Amelie, that is directly inspired, if a reproduction of Charlie Chaplin’s humour, and that overall is direly lacking in originality but is overly sentimental, then we have a hope in hell of even making the shortlist of nominations!

I couldn't agree more!

'Barfi'!!! Seriously? Well, you can be sure we are not winning any international awards this year. Not if we keep making choices like this.

Must've been Paan Singh Tomar.

reply

Should have been Paan Singh. Barfi will not win because of plagiarism.

PST or Kahaani or Shanghai.

Barfi is a good movie but horrible choice for Oscars (if at all we care for it). We should have send something original like Paan SIngh Tomar or Gangs of Waseypur. I don't think even Kahani or Shanghai would have been right choices for Oscars despite being very good movies. The Indain seclection committe for Oscars should have people with exposure to World Cinema.

They sent "Peepli Live" some years ago without realising that Hollywood made a much better movie on the same subject 50 years back (Ace in the Hole).

Paan Singh Tomar or Kahaani or Gangs of Wasseypur(which has got a "City of God" kind of touch, not copied though)...
I mean at least they can be proudly called Bollywood Originals.

I doubt barfi can cut ice with academy which has such wide spectrum of movies to choose from in the foreign language category. Its a good movie but not a classic as is being made out to be. There are loads of movies with deformity / disease of some form engulfing the main character. Such movies are available in abundance in all languages. For me a better choice would have been Paan Singh Tomar. Its different as a athelete turns into bandit (a kind of hurricane touch). Such themes are seen rarely. But at the end of day all of us have opinion. Those who had to make a choice have already done so.

BARFI! - AN OSCAR-MATERIAL !!!

* I think Barfi! is the right choice for India at the Oscars because it has the potential to touch millions of hearts all over the globe.

* The performances are extraordinary and the beauty of Darjeeling and Kolkata have been captured by the cinematographer. The music is very beautiful.

* As far as the plagiarism charges against Barfi! are concerned, I think lifting and reproducing some iconic scenes from iconic films is NOT Plagiarism, it's called a 'Tribute'. Like, the 2011 Oscar Winning Best Foreign Language film "The Artist", it is also a 'Tribute to the Silent Era'. The heart of a film, i.e. the Story of Barfi! is ORIGINAL.

* The strongest points

@Like, the 2011 Oscar Winning Best Foreign Language film "The Artist"

"The Artist" won Best Picture, "A Separation" won Best Foreign Language Film in 2011

haha, kya bakchodi hai yeh.
No Signature. Deal with it.

There you go......that tells everything about the standard of Indian cinema. Barfi is a decent enough movie but the fact that it is considered to represent the biggest movie industry is a sad sad news. I was tempted to see the movie because of the inflated (which I realise now) IMDB rating but no way can it be rated above 8, it is a good movie and for the industry that is focussed on delivering masala movies, it a step in the right direction but there is no reason for the Bollywood lovers to get carried away. Films of yesteryears like RDB and Lagaan (just on top of my head) are head and shoulders above Barfi. So good luck though you don't stand a chance.
