5 y.o. Lisa knows what an abstract is, but doesn't know what

a coincidence is. This type of writing takes me out of a movie. How many five year olds know what abstract art is? Not many. Lisa did, yet she doesn't know what a coincidence is. So is this kid supposed to be above average intelligence or not? Which is it?

That Jobs's coincidence scene at the beginning of the movie is quite hard to watch for me...
That, and other scenes, was he actually like how he was portrayed in the movie???
(I don't use nor follow news of iPod, iPad, etc. and know very little about Apple and Jobs)

I never met the man personally, but apparently he enjoyed soaking his feet in the toilet to calm his nerves.

Her mother was (and still is) an artist, and apparently quite a flaky one. Seems reasonable to me that a child raised by an abstract artist would know that word, even at five.

reply

Was that mentioned in the movie or was that something you looked up? I don't remeber her saying that she was an artist.

Makes sense. Didn't know her mommy was an "artist."

reply

Even without her mother being an artist, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that she heard the idea somewhere, from someone. Kids absorb a lot but that doesn't mean they know everything.

Thanks for that incredible insight.

My first instinct is that you're being sarcastic but if not, you're welcome!

My 9 y.o. has been taking about algorithms since she was 7, but she still asks what seemingly simple words mean from time to time. I didn't have a clue that the word algorithm even existed, much less what it was until high school! I think it depends on what they learn at school, from family/friends, etc. Kids are basically sponges! Lol

I don't really understand your point. People learn and pick little things up all over the place - especially children. They don't have to learn about everything in an even manner.

I remember learning things like surrealism and psychedelia when I was younger than ten (I was very interest in art). I remember reading books like Lemony Snicket's in which political systems, psychological ideas and long, archaic words are taught to the reader.

Yet at the same time, there would be a great many things you would expect a kid to know that I hadn't yet come across.

Why is it hard to believe Lisa might have come across the term "abstract" and asked her mum what it meant, but that she didn't know what a coincidence was?
