I couldn't believe it's budget was in that range. I actually enjoyed the movie, but I can't even begin to imagine where all that money went. An entire season of The Expanse costs about $40M and it looks so much more visually elaborate and complex than anything in Chaos Walking.

money laundering is a big thing in hollywood

These days, there's also another possibility. You know how netflix pays for films? It covers the production costs and then gives a bit on top as profit to the film investors. How do you make a crapload more money in that scenario? Inflate the production costs to extreme amounts - if it costs 20 million to make a film, but you tell netflix it cost a 100 mill (with paperwork similar to pentagon's 1000 dollar cups/spoons), when they pay the production costs+20%, you'll make a hundred million instead of merely 20.

I think you nailed it. It is the biggest industry in America now, how to cheat American and take all its money and wealth. I was just reading a book about how the entire American portfolio of huge successful companies has been bought with debt, so no taxes are paid, then they loot the company of any cash it has, run it into the ground sell off the pieces ... and repeat. Over and over and over again until there is nothing left but rich crooks that do not have anything better to do but try to now figure out ways to stupefy and enslave the people.

That reminds me of what Jackie Chan said about the Chinese mafia in the Chinese film world: "They sell the movie to the whole world, get like eight million back. They spend two million on the movie, so they just stick six million in the pocket."
