For me 4, 5 and yes even 6 still have likable characters that I root for, well maybe not all of them in 5 but the carry overs form 4, the autistic kid and even the main new girl.... and of course the Dog.
I actually think in 4 the supporting cast is better written then in the original.

I agree. In many ways, part 4 is my favorite of the series. Of course, it's hard to compare it to the original, since the original paved the way. But part 4 had a lot of really good characters and a lot of freshness to it. I think Mr. King was speaking in generalities though. He says "by the time of Halloween part 4 or Friday the 13th part 9..." you were rooting more for the villain than the characters. Certainly Friday the 13th got to that status way before part 9, so I don't think he was being too specific in those statements, just throwing out a sequel number to emphasize how many sequels there were in those series.
