Great insight on how lazy they've become and why their seasons have sucked for the last 3 or so. They even admit they used to spend 2-3 weeks on writing and creating ONE episode, now they spend literally only 3 months out of a year "creating" their twice-annual mini-seasons. What are they doing the other 9 months?? If they hate writing so much, they should just quit now while they're... already behind.

"Writing South Park is actually the worst part for me. I just hate doing it."- Trey Parker

You're in a huge minority my friend.

The 6-day deadline is a huge creative challenge, it enables them to produce more material AND keep it fresh and current. Each series of South Park is now like a mini time-capsule reflecting the social and political landscape of the year it was produced.

I think you heard Trey ultimately say it's not as enjoyable under pressure but he recognises the added benefits the deadline brings.

You should probably go back to watching The Simpsons or Family Guy mate. There's two shows which have long been past their sell by date. So much so I cringe when I try and watch them these days. Family Guy is resorting to ripping off Star Wars... AGAIN. *sigh*

And did you REALLY just ask "What have they been doing?". Did you watch the documentary or what? They've been producing, directing and writing the most decorated musical on Broadway, "The Book of Mormon". Only took them 7 years.

I cringe watching SP! weird

Great documentary, really enjoyed it, though it was a bit irritating hearing them talk about how often the episodes get rushed at the end, compromising plot/cutting out jokes. I see the benefit of the 6 day concept, but there are definitely drawbacks which have been hindering the show in recent seasons

"They even admit they used to spend 2-3 weeks on writing and creating ONE episode, now they spend literally only 3 months out of a year "creating" their twice-annual mini-seasons."

And what the hell are those other "writers" doing there? All they do is sit and laugh at Trey's bad jokes.

"If they hate writing so much, they should just quit now while they're... already behind."

Because they're both experiencing mid-life crisis and want to hang on to their youths. So much that it's gotten pathetic.

reply

It's pathetic isn't it?

When Trey was drawing the human centipede and everyone was laughing I was just rolling my eyes. That episode is the epitome of why South Park is no longer funny. They just want to be gross and scream curse words at each other.

Hell, even in this film Trey was basically just screaming *beep* ASS" for 5 minutes and everyone in the room is cracking up. Why?? It reminds me of being nine and being in a group where one nine year old has learned how to swear. So he starts shouting curse words and everyone in the room starts laughing cause they think they are being naughty.

South Park is dead. The most recent episodes that were good was the Facebook one and the World of Warcraft one. Those were great and were perfect examples of what they can do with today's culture. Now I realize it's been seasons since those episodes and they are never going to be funny again.

They had a good run and now it's time to end it. Maybe someone else can get the time slot and get a decent comedy going.

They still love South Park, they call it "their thing".

reply

I'm pretty sure they've been making an episode a week for majority of the series. meh, I don't think the show is at its peak. But I still enjoy it, and it's still my favourite show on TV.

"What are they doing the other 9 months?"

You do realize they have been involved in other projects? Specifically, the Book of Mormon play/movie. Not only that, maybe they want time for themselves and their families? Do you really expect them to work out South Park everyday out of the year?

It doesn't make them "lazy" that they do things differently now, it makes them busy.

reply

"I'm pretty sure they have been doing an episode in a week for the majority of the show."

Ummm, no. Read other comments or, even better, watch the documentary.

South Park is still better than Family Guy or The Simpsons these days. At least they have the capacity to be somewhat original and occasionally funny--unlike the other two aforementioned shows. The Simpsons is by far my favorite show of all-time (92-98), but they have gone way past their expiration date. And Family Guy hasn't been good since season 4.

reply

Well actually they started doing 6 day episodes around season 4 or 5. The problem is they ran out of ideas, thus the dramatic shift to current events. And unfortunately it just isn't working out how they want it to.

I laughed and cried a bit when Parker straight up admitted there were episodes where they just pulled something out of their ass to finish it and he ultimately didn't like the episode at all, but still aired it.

I love South Park. And this was a fantastic documentary. But almost in a depressing way. Like one about genocide in Africa. Even before this came out, I knew from watching the show this is what they were doing. 6 Days to Air just confirmed my fears.

But I still laughed occasionally at a lot of the new episodes so I'm going to remain hopelessly optimistic.

I thought it was a good doco, and especially enjoyed it when they were all in the writers room bouncing lurid jokes off of each other. I actually enjoyed Season 15 a lot and the HumanCentIpad episode was hilarious in my opinion.

Personally, I don't have a problem with the way they do things these days. If they can do an episode in 6 days and it delivers the groceries then so be it.
