What ever happened to the "real people" challenges?

This goes for PR too... I'm an average size, but I have a large bust. It's hard to style and I wish there were challenges that made the designers really put some effort into designing for the people who will buy their clothes! I own a Nick Verros dress that looks great, but it's not anything he would design for the show.

I also love watching the designers freak out about having to buy more fabric for anyone who is not a size 0 and to make darts for the boobs, but that is the real challenge, right? I know even Heidi can't wear half the stuff they send down the runway!

The naturist challenge was essentially the "real people" challenge in that the "models" presented a variety of body types and ages. However, no one was actually grossly fat or exceptionally short.

I'd like to be a pessimist, but this is a luxury I cannot afford.—Joseph of Cordoba

I would think the PR Challenge to design for members of the crew counts as a "Real people" challenge, too.

True, but the naturalists and even the crew members didn't seem to have disproportionate body types.. Remember the season where the designers had to design for another designer's family member? That was brutal. I'd just love maybe for them to design for me... 😛 I'm quite tall, narrow waist, but size 12 pants, large bust... Kinda hourglass shape... Makes it hard to find pants in this "year of the booty!" I have the flattest booty ever!

My favorite "real people" challenge was a long while ago, when the models were still being featured in their own right. In this case, we were shown the models demonstrating how to walk on the runway. One of the "real people" was a spritely little lady, who I liked because she was only marginally taller than my 5'0". As she strutted her stuff, she proclaimed: "I understand that 5'3" is the perfect height for a runway model." And her professional model mentor said to us: "She's so cute: I want to put her in my pocket!"

I also enjoy those challenges, BUT - in the real world of fashion design most designers create looks for size zero women. Sad but true.

It's just unfortunate because there is (literally) such a small amount of people who can wear that size beyond age 15...
