Sam was robbed.

Just looking at the two designs that Sam and Ken came up with during their one-hour, I think that Sam's look was way more interesting and the idea behind it was far more creative, original, and well-thought-out than Ken's stupid, boring look.

Besides from that, one of the looks that Ken got to use was one of his own. How is that fair at all? Not only did he get a dress that he made but, it also fit his model perfectly because, duh, he's been using the same model this whole time and he made it for her, didn't he? He also didn't even change the overall silhouette of the dress. He just made it shorter and removed the beading. THAT'S IT. He also just added a stupid-ass collar and the only part of the other look that he used was a tiny bit of black fabric to outline the stupid collar. Sam was given two looks that he did not make, he used a lot of fabric from both, and he made a jacket out of pants for crying out loud and it was a decent looking jacket that he made in one freaking hour. The dress was also super cute and it looked nothing like the original dress that he was using. It was a whole new dress and sure, it may not have fit his model perfectly but, he only had one hour and unlike Ken, that dress wasn't made specifically for that model originally.

I'm not even going to bother watching the finale of this season, it's just been so stupid and infuriating. Sam should have gone to the finale, at least he was confident in this last challenge and he made something super interesting and cool looking. All Ken did was make a super boring blouse using his super boring print, and a pencil skirt. How does that get him into the finale? He wasn't even confident at all in his look and he knew that it was garbage. They shouldn't even have bothered with the one-hour challenge since what Ken made was clearly the losing look and he knew that. I also don't buy that he didn't do well because it was a print-on-print challenge. Give me a freaking break. How hard is it to mix prints? It's not. Any ordinary person would be able to create a decent print and then find another one to compliment it with. He choked big time and should have been eliminated for it.

Thank you! Very well said.

Can't feel that bad because Sam's dress from last week's avant garde challenge should have gotten him sent home. Granted, he probably would have a more interesting finale show then Ken.

reply

I liked Sam's avant garde a lot better before Zanna came and ruined it by making it purple. The original looked more like the painting that inspired it. I hope designers in the future learn to blow off the mentors and do what they want

IMO, Sam should have been gone at least 2 or 3 episodes ago. White cotton fishnet is barely acceptable on one outfit, but 3?! I just don't see how he thought that was a good idea. And to me it's not a good runway look.

reply

You got it! It was a make up challenge to get rid of him long overdue! ;-/

Personally, I have zero interest in a finale from Ken. He's boring. I don't recall much he's done all season long. It's all the same, blended crap. And I agree he had an unfair advantage going into this mini challenge. He just refined his existing look by essentially cutting off the bottom (which the judges didn't care for) and adding sleeves. Of course it looked polished - he hardly did anything! And 100% agree that he didn't even include the second design much to meet what the challenge was supposed to be. He just worked on his own.

Although... I can't really praise what Sam did either. I guess there were some ideas, but it was too shabby looking to really appreciate. The only time I've seen a great dress transformation in one hour was from Dom and Uli. Makes what Sam did look like a pile of rags (which it was). That said, his print from the actual challenge was my favorite. I can't see people buying the other ones. So in that sense, he still had a leg up on Ken, so I agree that the redo was pointless. Ken should have gone. Long ago.

I did not like Sam's one hour challenge. It looked cheap and poorly made. Yes, they only had an hour but it was terrible looking.

I so agree.

So glad, his lack of talent showed on that 1-hour "dress".

He didn't use the same Model for the whole season. The model he made the baroque outfit for was white, the model he had for the one hour challenge was black. They are models so of course their measurements are going to be almost alike, but not the same.

Please go back and compare season 5 episode 6 going for Baroque fashion to this last episode. Different models.

One of the dresses that Sam used on his model for the one hour challenge, was made for the fairy tale challenge and *GASP*. . .It was made for Sam's model because Alexander made the dress for the model.

You said in another post that you think Sam is one of the most talented and innovative designers. Really? Where is the talent? He even stated in this last episode when he was at mood, that he was going for the "Neoprene net fabric that he can't keep his hands off of."

Even Dom stated that mood probably does not have any more Neoprene net fabric due to Sam using it again and again for every single challenge.

A talented, innovative designer does NOT use the same fabric choices again and again or make jumpsuits week after week. An innovative designer is one who can brings new designs to the fashion world.

To be honest Sam was a very safe designer and picked fabrics that he felt safe using.

Was he really robbed of spot in the finale? No. Think about it. The designers are given four days to create eight looks. Compare the one hour looks together. Yeah concept was interesting but it was poorly executed. There was thread dangling off the clothes, One of the shoulders had fabric bunching up together and the other shoulder had thread. The bottom of the dress was not even and thread was again dangling.
Compare that to Ken's one hour look. The bottom of his dress was even. No thread dangling. Sure Ken's dress look simple and Sam had some interesting ideas in his design but that is it. There is something that has been reiterated time and time again on every single project runway season down to every single season of all stars and that is to edit down. Sam had too many ideas going at once for his design and that is why it was not as polished as Ken's design.

Sam needs to practice more time sewing and less time being snarky on a blog.

Sam have great ideas, in fact I would say his ideas are much more forward thinking than anyone left on the show who are just recycling their own ideas.

HOWEVER, he really needs to practice his sewing skills. He always have trouble finishing and polishing his look.

So the question here is this: Is PR a design competition or a sewing competition?

I think it should be 60/40 (60= design, 40=sewing) with priority on design.

Eventually these designers would have to hire sewers and tailors to accomplish their designs), but they can't hire other designers, that would not represent who they are.

The net fabric is Sam's style and signature (or at least an effort to create a signature), like Kini's denim and Sean's fringe. Its a market and image strategy, a few years from now no one will remember them except for the signature they consistently use or create.

But that really isn't the problem. The problem is his construction. If he polish it right, no one will talk about how many times he used it. They will just be so blown away they forget they already saw it. That is why he needs to practice his sewing more.

So if we are talking STRICTLY about design, Sam is one of the most innovative and creative designs. His last one-hour design is so out of left field it looks like a backpack. Its an original design and idea he is willing to risk. Ken just cut the same dress shorter.

reply

Agreed. Emily should have had Sam's spot. While I think he has talent, he isn't on par with the other designers yet and some of the designs that elevated him in the competition were not his own. Ken deserved that final spot.

reply

Ken said it right though:
If they were to judge plainly on that challenge, Sam would win.
If they were to judge based on the whole season, Ken would win.

As for the 1-hour challenge, I agree, to some extent.

Sam's design was more of a "design" and idea driven. But it was poorly constructed.
Ken's design was well constructed. But that's because he really did not do anything but cut the dress and add the collar lining. That's it.

So that means they are back again to the original dilemma, that is, will they decide based on that challenge, or based on the whole season. And they probably chose the latter.

reply

The challenge was one hour. Are you going to paint the Mona Lisa? Or are you going to fill in gaps?

Ken said he was going to work smarter, not harder. Just taking a glance at both outfits which one was more pleasing to the eye?

reply

Sam has been privileged all throigh the season and everyone knows it. I was shocked and overjoyed when they let their golden boy go. He may have an interesting idea but it's one idea. It's clear he's very limited and much too green. The first time you see his style it's interesting. But certainly not the tenth time you see the same look walking down. He needs to grow a lot before he's on par with the other designers.
