The nude woman near the end... help me understand...

... at an exhibit that features at least two explicitly naked humans, why did the guards go batspit over the woman stripping in front of Marina!? I can imagine Marina would have been very welcoming of her, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that after the fact she gave those guards a piece of her mind for interfering with the natural progression of the interactive exhibit... anyone else agree?

reply

Yeah, I thought that was the point. What's more natural than being naked?

Though I also feel guards coming in and taking the naked woman away is also some kind of statement on society and how far humanity has wondered from its beginnings.

These are some movies of mine. Enjoy!

Yes, I suppose the nature of the exhibit is such that... WHATEVER happens can become a part of it. Now that I think about it, I suppose Marina would have been thrilled with either outcome, so long as it's REAL.

But would she enjoy having a pantyliner stuck to her face as well?

Reference is inscrutable because there is nothing to scrute.

reply

Sure, insanity is natural. lol It's not normal but it is natural.

It was the same as the guy who put tbe frame on his face... It stopped becoming Abramovic's art and started becoming her audience's performance piece. They both pulled focus from MA too much.

And yet, out of the many thousands of participants they kept this lady in the film ... so in a way she did get to be part of the performance. Would be interesting to know what Marina thought of it all.

reply

I agree--I would love to know what Marina thought of the whole thing. I kept waiting for her to intervene when they took the young woman out, but I suppose that would have broken the performance.

reply

I expected that whatever organizer was around would walk up to Marina and ask her whether it was alright for that woman to sit there naked.

But... thinking about it now... that may have created a never-ending string of things people wanted to try. So in that sense, it made sense to escort her away.

And at any rate... Marina broke the performance herself multiple times? Because the point was that she sits still there, just looking at people, no gesturing or anything ("only the gaze", as she said). But in the documentary alone, I believe you see her do it twice - once with Ulay and once with a woman where she puts her hand across her chest.

The woman who was ejected for stripping wrote a blog about the incident and her intentions. I tried to find the article on the internet (and failed) - but it boils down to this - had she informed the guards of her intent - it would have been OK. She asserts that the guards said "You should have told us". Otherwise the gesture was interpreted as too risky. Regardless I am certain that Marina would not have cared in the very least. This is a woman, who I greatly admire, who has turned her exhibitionism, stamina and masochism into an art form.

The audience was still supposed to be an audience. Like you can't kill people in the cinema just because there is a murder on the screen.

reply

Bottom line, it's her show and people are there to see her not you. There has to be minimally acceptable behavior.
