If you ignore the Anime is it good?

If you've never seen the Anime tv show is this movie good or enjoyable as a Giant Monster type movie it's by Toho and the Director is doing the new Godzilla just wondering if I should check it out.

reply

The beginning and the ending hold up well enough, and for a Giant Monster movie that's all that really matters.

But ... too hard to ignore how awesome the anime is and considering how BLAND the middle of the movie is, there is no excuse for not drawing from the original story instead of trying to come up with something new and more simplified.

reply

Thanks for the reply I haven't been able to see it yet,I'm a huge Giant Monster movie fan but also really enjoyed the anime. It really doesn't make sense to ignore so much of the source material like you were saying that's just stupid. Are the effects all CGI or are The Titans actors and they use miniature cities and effects?

reply

its more of a companion for the anime.. if yuove seen the anime than you would appreciate it more because you can fill in the blanks for yourself.. I see it as an ode to fans of the anime. if you haven't.. yeah youd probably get a bit confused.

reply

Are the effects CGI or is there old school Miniatures and actors for the Titans?

reply

"I see it as an ode to fans of the anime"

That's an outright ridiculous statement as the large majority of anime fans ABSOLUTELY HATE this adaptation. That is undisputable.

The CGI effects for the regular titans are not that great, plus they give the regular titans an evil laugh, when the anime has them just sort of grunt or groan.

reply

I don't know why they wouldn't use actors for The Titans I hate when they use too much CGI.

reply

[deleted]

they use 90% actors.

I could have sworn in the Anime, they specifically mention that while they had a lot of similar anatomy as a human, most of them don't function. I believe they mentioned the vocal cord and breathing, both things the titan doesn't utilize. I could be wrong, but I could have sworn there was a scene discussing it like that. This is why in the anime, the titans don't really make vocal noise.

reply

The titans are a mixture of actors with prosthetics and CGI.

reply

Eh... It has its moments for sure. But the characterization couldn't be more bland and/or outright strange.

How does it feel to be deconstructed?

reply

"But the characterization couldn't be more bland and/or outright strange."

Quite the opposite. These characters are real people and they grow with the story.

reply

Are you talking about the movie or the anime?

How does it feel to be deconstructed?

reply

The anime/manga.

reply

I was referring to the movie regarding bland characterization.

How does it feel to be deconstructed?

reply

Might be enjoyable on a camp level to a fresh newcomer but as a fan of the series and manga it was impossible to stop smh throughtout.

My hope for the new Godzilla is that the other director Hideaki Anno have more say in his direction.
He is the man behind Neon Genesis Evangelion so he should be able to get raw emotions from characters and handle huge action sequences that have actual consequences on cities and its people.

This director however made Japan Sinks, which was the biggest budget Japanese movie at the time and was a joke of a disaster movie.
He also made this (AoT) which is also the most expensive Japanese movie ever and its a stinker.
He is Michael Bay of Japan.

Godzilla 2016 also looks like it will become the most expensive Japanese film ever.

Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down and a Wagging Finger of Shame

reply

Lets hope with it being Co-directed Hideaki Anno will help with the vision and it's a Great Godzilla movie.

reply

If you never saw the anime or read the manga then its still pretty good as a campy monster flick. It would be like Godzilla meets the Walking Dead with a bit of Power Rangers. It's a horror monster flick with some high action. Someone had the idea of making a zombie movie with the zombies being 30-100 feet tall. Who's gonna fight that?

reply

"If you never saw the anime or read the manga then its still pretty good as a campy monster flick."

No. No it is not.

"It's a horror monster flick with some high action. "

Not really ... more like chubby naked people grabbing at people swinging on wires. It's really retarded.

Skip the movie ... watch the anime. Maybe they'll do a reboot.

reply

Why do you have to pick everyone OPINIONS apart like you're in a scientific debate. It's a movie. Some people will like it some won't. And the original poster asked "if you ignore the anime" so your hate for these people crapping all over your beloved story holds no water. As a person that grew up with Godzilla, Gamora, Freddy Kruger, Jason, the original Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, Ninja turtles and Power Rangers I can see all of the campy elements of these put into this movie. If I never saw the Anime I think I'd be like HOLY CRAP 50' tall Zombies and bad ass zip line soldiers. I'd excuse the effects as its low budget compared to Hollywood so I'd still like it. You don't ... that's ok as it your OPINION.

reply

That's exactly how I feel I believe Barney is way too attached and obsessed with the anime it's impossible for him to separate the two. Me I watched the anime and enjoyed it but I'm more of a Giant Monster movie fan. When I saw Toho was making this and it's by one of the Godzilla directors that's all I needed. That opening scene with The Titan breaching the wall hooked me right away.

reply

"That's exactly how I feel I believe Barney is way too attached and obsessed with the anime it's impossible for him to separate the two."

Nope. I am simply reminding everyone that there is a better version of this story:

Shingeki no kyojin (2013)

You cannot watch the entirety of both (and the manga to boot) and sit back and say the crap you do without being a complete liar. Which you are.

reply

Dude calling someone a liar about their opinion is the ultimate sign of a fanboy troll. Sorry to let you know. I don't like a lot of negativity but you seem to be personally hurt when people say they like this movie. Its unnatural. The guy obviously has a certain taste in his choice of entertainment. He likes monster movies. He's not as big an anime or manga fan, thus he likes this movie more. I loved the old Godzilla movies. Were they highly though out intellectually stimulating films? No. But sometimes you just want to watch giant monsters wreck some obviously fake cities.

Nope. I am simply reminding everyone that there is a better version of this story:

Saying one version is better is opinion not fact. Taste is subjective so there can be no absolutes. The best that can be said is majority OPINION. But lots of people will like this better, especially people who don't care for anime or manga.

You cannot watch the entirety of both (and the manga to boot) and sit back and say the crap you do without being a complete liar. Which you are.

Just get over yourself. Calling someone a liar for what they like is idiotic. Your OPINION is not more important than everyone else's and from what I'm seeing on the boards even the people that agree with you that AoT is a bad movie are separating themselves from you because your obsession with this topic is borderline psycho.

Don't get nervous with him. Just laugh at him. Pity him. Laugh at him again.

It's fun.  come to the dark side.

Nervous? No. Pity yeah. Hoping he'll learn from this. Doubting he'll learn from this.

I laugh at 99.99% of all the silly debates and 10000% of the the ones by fanboys. You think this is bad, youtube and comicvine threads are hilarious. I sometimes get more enjoyment reading youtube threads than some of the videos they are commenting on.

It depends on what you like. Even Sharknado has a cult following. So if you like campy monster flicks, with some zombie terror thrown in and a bit of spiderman/ninja warriors and you don't expect Hollywood budget effects, then its decent fluff. If you're super critical then you might not.

reply

"If you're super critical then you might not." "Sharkanado"

There is a LOT of middle ground between those two things.

Let's check the ratings, shall we?

The anime is still at 8.9
The movie is down to 5.2 from 5.3

The title of this thread is "If you ignore the Anime is it good?"
Stop being butthurt and look at this objectively for once. I'm sure a majority of the lowest ratings are from fans of the Anime and Manga. I doubt this would score 8s or 9s otherwise but if you took the fanboys out of the equation then this would be in the mid 6s to low 7s possibly. There are a lot of fanboys.

If you ignore the anime (and by that logic the manga too) then it is a decent piece of fluff for the right audience. They made Sharknado 3, so it must have a decent enough of a cult following and audience to make 2 sequels to what common sense says is a crap movie. AoT is actually much better than Sharknado IMHO. And fans of cheesy campy movies will be entertained, maybe laughing at some of the ridiculousness but entertained none the less.

Dude I really hope trying to down a cheezy piece of scifi fiction isn't your passion in life because that would be pathetic. Go get a pet or something. I know a really good non profit animal shelter ;)

Do you understand English at all? This thread is about ignoring the Anime and by that the Manga. Pretend that neither exist for a few minutes. Is that possible for you?

I am sure you would like to ignore and pretend the Holocaust didn't exist as well.

This is real life, *beep*hole ... you don't get to just pick and choose your reality.

there are way better anime out there, believe me. I personally prefer the older ones for story and character depth [70's, 80's and 90's], but as to "animation" is concerned, the newer ones are def. better [but not story-wise... they all feel like copies from the older ones].

It's still a hollow, rushed, nonsensical mess, even without knowledge of the anime.
