Eren's Appearance (SPOILERS)

When Eren was in Titan form, I was wondering why he had such a strange facial structure all of a sudden. I see now that the shape of his face is clearly modeled after the anime, but before I knew that, the whole time I was watching, I kept thinking "he looks like a wolf." They made a lot of references to wolves hunting cattle and he seemed so indignant when referred to this way. It sort of makes sense that he would favor a more lupine appearance, even if subconsciously. Just wondering if the reason he appears that way is ever addressed in book or anime.
