why? please answer! (spoiler)

Can someone please explain to me why the soldiers killed everyone, even the doctors... please...

reply

Seemed strange but the best reason I could figure was for the sake of cleansing/containment - to protect themselves and others from the virus.

You heard one of them on the radio reporting that there were no survivors... Which was weird, as if they were not necessarily under orders to kill everyone.

reply

No survivors was the order, not his report.

The 18th deadline would make some sense if they were on a physically isolated location like and island.

"As the disease is contained, we'll give them until the 18th to come up a cure. If they have nothing by then, we nuke / firebomb the whole island and bury this incident."

But the map showed they were on mainland. Also, why send in a team of soldiers (who might get infected themselves), when you can easily rain death from above.

When I'm gone I would like something to be named after me. A psychiatric disorder, for example.

reply

either way it wouldn't make any sense to kill people who are healthy. you don't see governments killing all healthy people during a flue epidemic or outbrakes of new diseases like SARS or the bird flu. it's always: isolate the infected, protect the healthy, go on until there is a cure und by then cope with the circumstances/find a a way to live with it. all those "kill everything that moves"-clichés in movies are nonsense ^^

reply

I have to disagree; the 'kill everything that moves' cliché in movies makes far more sense than the 'politically correct' way our governments always want to do things. It might make sense for a while but the more wide-spread a disease becomes, the less effective that system is, especially if the virus/disease is unknown to the public and has an unpredictable incubation period. In regards to this show, there is literally no way to successfully screen and/or isolate every person who comes into contact with the virus. The best way I can think to manage this kind of an outbreak would be to calculate the rate of spread, quarantine the highest infected areas and bomb the crap out of them. It's one thing to want to ensure that the survival rate is as high as possible but another to let it get so out of hand that the infected start to outnumber the healthy.

reply

This disease was nothing like SARS or influenza. Fortunately, we've never seen anything like a plague such as this in the modern world. Thus, we have no idea how we would act. We especially have no idea how we would act when there was a ghastly 100% fatal disease that has spread to millions all over the world, causing chaos and social collapse. Killing everyone in an infection hotspot just to be on the safe side does not seem terribly unlikely in such a situation.

reply

It was just plain ridiculous.
They would at least have wanted to question the doctors to find out what, if anything, they had discovered about the virus.
And why would they have been shut away there with no means of communicating with the outside world? No way to report back to the military/government.
This movie is set up the way it is to obfuscate how the main story is kind of dumb and not very interesting. I'd rather have just seen another rage zombie apocalypse movie, such as The Horde.

reply

As much as I liked the movie the two flaws you mentioned were massive plotholes:
- Research facility with no contact with the outside world?
- Killing people who are visibly healthy?

reply

The world was in chaos. Maybe they didn't have all channels of communication to utilize.

reply

Everyone was infected, so the military shot them all to stop it spreading further. The injections were a temporary measure to alleviate the zombie-like symptoms. The mute woman was the only one who wasn't infected, and she hid from the military... Hence the military saying "no survivors". Pay attention people!

reply

A team of Doctors were kept in a isolated region, given a facility, supplies and a bunch of the sick people (the world is suffering from a plague that causes zombie like symptoms). The sick/zombie people that they had to experiment on escaped from the cages and total chaos spread around the compound. The crew had to resort to taking a early version of the cure but the main side effect would be short term memory loss. The memory loss part is key. They probably would normally have regular contact with HQ about their progress but because of the memory loss HQ didn't get any status updates about the project and presumed the mission failed, thus total cleansing.

Your welcome.

Hello V-unnik,

In your explainataion, how do you fit the deadline of the 18 ?

Thanks in advance

reply

Could have been the 20th, 25th, 15th, etc. just a deadline imposed upon them.

reply

My interpretation on why the soldiers shot them was:

1. They already had a pre-conceived notion of the situation - that all would have turned zombies that require immediate shooting on site - lest there would be more infections.

2. Because of the above notion, it is extremely difficult for them to distinguish between healthy individuals and infected ones. Remember the scene when John and Sharon spotted some seemingly healthy beings doing gardening from a distance? They realised they were very wrong thereafter, right? Thus, based on the peculiarity of the contextual situation, the soldiers shot whatever that moved. The only way to save themselves from being shot was to devise an intelligent way of getting the soldiers' attention before they exercised their reflexes in shooting. I don't have a good ready example but if you do have some, please share it with all here.

I think because that cooler/eskie full of the blood vials wasn't delivered to the army on time, that date was when they'd come and torch the place

reply

That's what I thought. Though I'm erring on the side of it being a "temporary" cure which allays the symptoms for an unknown length of time (like Jacob had needle bruises but was "turning" towards the end. Also, why didn't Jonah and te mute woman take the box of temporary cures with them. Still, that last slow pan out over the huge mass grave was cool.

"Hot lesbian witches!"

There isnt any meaning to explain anything in this stupid crapfest of a movie...its just retarded made for retarded people cause they are the only ones who actually doesnt care for a plot and good script without alot of plot holes and unanswered questions...so please...just forget about this crap instead of wasting time and asking questions that no one can answer...the retards will think they know the asnwers but they dont, so making questions about this movie is like eating a hamburger with your ass...
