Italian Cookery Show

I've been struggling with this show, trying to like it. Today was no problem at all for me. I really enjoyed watching the great Lydia Bastianich, as well as the audience member who cooked for the hosts. Maybe it played better because there was less annoying banter and more serious talk about food. I don't want to sound mean, but, why is Daphne on this show?

I agree with everything you said! Lidia is my favorite chef, along w/ Martha Stewart. I love to watch her show on PBS, so I watch the clips from THE CHEW with her in them.

I really want to like this show too, but you can't chit-chat and cook good at the same time. It always seems as though they are so rushed, I don't get much out of watching them cook at all. In fact, I just tune in for the celeb chef guests and other stars. But, for serious cooking, this is not the show to find it.

And, yes, Daphne is very annoying! I know this is rude of me to say, but honestly, part of the reason I'm annoyed is I just don't like to look at her! Plus, her voice...she sounds too much like a teenager (the icky style these days) and not enough like a mature woman. When I watch anyone professional, I want to see and hear the elegance and sophistication in their speech that would indicate inelegance (sort of like Martha Stewart and to a little lesser degree, Lidia). But, so far, she's not coming across as very mature to me. So, if I were cooking with her, I would feel like the superior, which would be a very uncomfortable feeling, indeed. I guess we can't blame her too much though, maturity and class have been on a sharp decline for decades. Today, they are nearly non-existent.

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

I agree with both of you. I think that the recipes on this show can be good (not all of them are my taste but hey who says they have to be). The biggest problem for me is all the other stuff they throw in. It seems forced and cheesy to me. I have yet to make it through an entire episode of the show. I'm not crazy about Daphne but I really don't get Clinton Kelly's role either. What is he doing on a cooking show? Maybe he should give the cast makeovers at least that would be interesting.

I'm in the TV business, and although I get what you guys are saying, I think Clinton is a real asset to the show. People with his hosting skills are rare, he adds diversity (as is openly gay) and his crafting segments are hilarious, especially when they go wrong. I find Carla's weird twitchy style annoying, but still think it adds greatly to the energy of the show. Simon is funny as heck, and Batali is really terrific with the camera -- I think his "orange style" actually works. But Daphne...we all know why she's there. She has no food background and didn't even know what "kielbasa" was at the beginning. When she schools the audience while cooking something, it's painful. She is easy on the eyes, but seems so miscast on this. Wish they'd get Cat Kora or someone like that. I also love how they include the audience. And yes, they are primed with video monitors when to applaud and what to say, plus they are warmed up by a comedian beforehand. I am struck with how much fun they seem to be having because they're really included.
