My film of the year so far

I rarely enjoy romcom but this film really put a smile on my face. It's beautifully written, full of surprises and perfectly paced. The acting and design are magnificent. Romain Duris is a great physical performer and his recreation of Cary Grant-type body language is an utter joy. I haven't seen a film for years which was so clearly a labour of love - it is one of those films which can restore your faith in film. DO NOT MISS!!!

Just got back in from seeing it. Thought it was wonderful. The 6.7 rating on here is, sadly, a sign of the times...

Wow.

Or, looked at another way, it is because an American lost to a French in a competition previously dominated by Americans on American soil. We can be sore losers. I thought the movie was at least an 8 if not more. Definitely more than the 6.8 average.

It's shocking to me that the film doesn't have higher ratings. granted, I realize that it wouldn't do well in mainstream american cinema because of the lack of explosions, special effects or name brand stars, but I thought the film was fantastic! It had all the suspense, drama and energy that any sports film would have. Substitute the story line from having a typist to a football player, the people who gave this movie a low rating would probably have given it a 10.

Hey looked a lot like Bob Hope I thought!

Good call! I'm sure Romain probably studied all of the Golden Age comic greats and synthesised them into his performance.

Looks nothing like Bob Hope.

Completely agree. My missus and I have just come back from seeing it in the theatre and absolutely loved it. Yes, this film is a fluffy rom-com but it has a great central cast, a deliciously light comic touch and just looks so damn good!

Good movie! Here's my review: http://flickfeast.co.uk/reviews/dvd-reviews/populaire-2012/

Romain Duris looks just like Randy Travis and I found that very distracting. I did love the cha-cha number!

What surprises? The fact that it was about typists was a surprise. But it was so predictable all the way through, the ending you could see a mile off. So just a run of the mill romcom, though done better than the rubbish Hollywood churns out on a regular basis.

This movie fired on all cylinders for me. 1950s France, the colors, the costumes, the story, the lead actors had so much chemistry I could feel it, the score.....

I've never seen Romain Duris before, but I'm a fan of his for life now. I want to see everything he's ever done. I like his very unconventional, interesting face. He has a real natural grace to his acting. Nothing seemed forced.

I agree. Do not miss this one! I put this in my Netflix que forever ago, and I'm so glad they kept it this long.
