Any group that comes along will kill your animals and strip the land of all visible food. If you are planting perennial food like food forests (fruit and nut trees) and tubers, then the food supply is very stable because it is seasonal or stored in the ground. Plus there are loads of edible foods that don't look anything like store bought vegetables.

Planting and creating abundance is really the only way to provision against any EOTWAWKI or SHTF event or even a gradual decline.
