Most Likely Doomsday Scenarios

The only ones I can think of are:

-The overdue eruption of the Yellowstone volcano

-A second Great Depression brought on by hyperinflation

-A viral outbreak leading to a global pandemic

The rest are just too fantastic.

I mean it's not as like states aren't doing this already....

A pandemic is defiantly on the table.

An asteroid/meteor/comet strike is a statistical certainty, We just don't know when or where. it might happen in 10,000 years, it might be entering our atmosphere this seco.....

Ah, you're right. I can't believe that one slipped my mind.

I'll edit that in quickly.

I don't see any of these as LIKELY - but there are some that are more possible than others...
My thoughts:
Economic collapse is the most likely - but more along the lines of major depression that societal collapse
Pandemic is definitely a possibility - bird flu, ebola have been in the news recently
A dirty bomb is one that has been talked about a bit whenever terrorism is contemplated
Major storms are always a possibility
In some places earthquake is also an option
For the most part I don't see wholesale societal collapse as a realistic eventuality - but localised issues definitely are.

Not to mention the accompanying tsunami in coastal areas. The Cascadia subduction zone has had a major earthquake every few hundred years, the last being in 1700. There is a 10-15% chance of a 9.0+ earthquake in the next 50 years. This is a recent discovery, so buildings in the Pacific Northwest have not been designed with such an event in mind. If it happens any time soon, it's going to be incredibly bad.

Every age has numerous end-of-the-world types. But history says deadly outbreaks have happened, such as the Influenza pandemic in 1918 that wiped out 50-100 million people. The Walking Dead scenario sounds scifi-ee but who would have believed in 1965 that was HIV hosted by fruit bats transmitted to human when eaten or to wild meat killed for food. 1.5 people died from it in 2013.

The next Great Depression caused by the collapse of the fiat currency is the #1 doomsday issue facing the world in the short (this decade) term. Still, like all doomsday scenarios it's <50% chance.

Really? Cmon...

If there's an apocalyptic volcanic eruption like these people expect, the whole world would be covered by a cloud of ash for years. Nothing is going to save you then, but it's highly unlikely that it would be that severe. And anything less would not lead to the collapse of society.

An economic breakdown would not be a shock event, it would be gradual and probably involve a series of wars etc... (this one is a maybe)

Global pandemics are not very likely, at least not in the Western world. The 1918 flu took hold in a lot of places because they where covered in rotting corpses and the people where starving after a horrible world. Furthermore medical and most other technologies where no where near as advanced as they are now. I think India and China could be hit hard, but for the most we'd be fine.

As for the terrorists wanting to occupy the US... I mean cmon people WTF. Oh and another favorite on this show is the government declaring martial law and stealing your guns... :o Not even worth the words I spent on it.

The only thing that I'd see as possible is an EMP attack, but there's no one with that capability that would actually carry that out. Except maybe in a global war, but in that case you'd have to be more worried about the thousands of nukes raining down. So the EMP effect would not be your biggest problem. But even if some terrorist would get hold of a nuclear devise... where would they get the intercontinental ballistic missile necessary to detonate it high in the atmosphere?

The only reasonably likely scenario would be connected to cyber attacks of some sort. But I think you'd be seriously underestimating your government if you think they haven't considered this and have taken measures to alleviate the effects already.

In all likelyhood, if there's a shock event society wouldn't break down. Instead people would try and help each other. Reality and history have proven this time and again.

The Yellowstone Caldera would create a very cold Earth for a while (years?), but it wouldn't effect how we do business.

We wheathered the great depression, and the most warlike nations survived it as well. Look at Venezuela, they're not exactly in a Mad Max world down there.

Viral outbreak; most survivors would probably stay in their homes and then eek out an existance with the remnants of civilization. So, again, it's another non issue.

I don't know what the "rest" are; robot uprising? Soviet briefcase nukes going off all over the place? Aliens finally landing to say hello?

doesn't bother me, but apparently it bothers the ignorant and the dumb-ass paranoids.
