I hated the mother so much!

And the sad part is that there are many women like her out there. On a side note, if any man talked to a child of mine like the way her new boyfriend did,the last thing I would say and do is "Get out" and slam the door right in his face.

Money isn't the root of all evil. Love of money is.

She was a crap parent indeed The only thing i would say is when Rudy went to visit her and mentioned the foster how she looked concerned something was wrong. She also spoke to him in a nicer manner than the guy she had in the house- i think she loved her son to some degree but loved her drugs more.

Also i would say it was quite clear she was being bribed to take him back by the other lawyer- i think had that not happened she would have left him with Rudy and Paul.

All in all not defending her- she was by no means a great parent but to me the worst people in the film was Pauls boss and the other lawyer.

She took him back because she wanted money to support her drug habit. All drug addicts are selfish and don't care about anyone or anything but their habit.

I googled whether drug addiction was a disease and it looks like most professionals believe it is. One statistic I saw was that children of drug addicts are eight times more likely to become drug addicts themselves. So I think getting mad at someone struggling with addiction might make as much sense as getting angry with a mother who neglects her child because of the suffering she is experiencing due to cancer. 
