Two Things Wrong (That I Noticed)

Both having to do with digital editing or at least makeup.

One, Taron Egerton's neck mole should never have been allowed in this movie! What were they thinking? Even if the actor considers it a trademark like Marilyn Monroe's beauty mark, which it is far from being, it has no place in a film about an actual person lacking such a blemish. The zits and five o'clock shadow I can overlook, but this is too much! The first viewing it distracted the hell out of me, and the second also a distraction as I tried looking at anything else.

Two, when Elton and Bernie arrive for the first concert at L. A.'s Troubador, some obvious archival footage appears depicting the area in the 1970s, but not archival enough! A theater marquee advertises "Jimmy Carter Victory Party." Unless there was another Jimmy Carter besides the president, or he did something before being elected to gain attention in L. A., Carter was not elected until November 1976. August 25, 1970 was Elton's first appearance at the Troubador, and they were so careful about other details! When the Troubador's manager waves a newspaper at him on a later appearance, Tora! Tora! Tora! is prominently visible, which did indeed appear in September 1970.

Robert de Niro has played a lot of real people and characters played before by other people who all lacked his giant cheek mole. It's incredibly annoying too.

reply

Yes, that is, but there is something grosser about a small neck mole than a large face mole.

reply

I caught the Carter thing as well and thought WTF lol

reply

Jimmy Carter, time traveler.

There were a few other things wrong unless the movie was a fictionalized account of his life. At the Troubadour in 1970 he did not play 'Crocodile Rock'. He opened w 'Your Song' in fact 1st night.

They wouldn't write Crocodile Rock for another 2 yrs.

Also he is in the studio working on "Don't go breaking my heart" before other songs like "Bennie and the Jets" and " Honky Cat" are performed on stage or as musical numbers suggesting they were all recorded around the same time period. The last 2 were recorded in 1972 in fact while "Don't go Breaking my Heart' wasn't actually recorded until 1976.

reply

Yes, it was a fictionalized/fantasy account with the songs worked in as they fit the story, not chronological. The "Crocodile Rock" scene was especially effective.

reply

Yeah, I'm willing to forgive the change in set list, because that scene absolutely positively called for a get-up-and-dance song.

And Elton didn't write that many get-up-and-dance songs, I can't think of one that would have worked better, or another that was bursting with the kind of innocent enthusiasm the scene called for. I mean the scene is about Elton losing his musical virginity, so to speak, a more adult song like "Honky Cat" just wouldn't do.

reply

I actually dreamed about that scene it was SO cool!

reply

Mmmm I for one didn't mind Taron's mole being in the film. I think it's pretty sexy, actually. I'd suck on that mole 'til it falls off any day. 😜

I noticed he was wearing the shoes with wings with the red jumpsuit - then after that scene is the shopping montage where he buys the shoes - so he was wearing them before he bought them. And I have no clue how I caught that.

reply

Maybe he liked the shoes so much he bought a second pair? Maybe the second pair were a gift for someone else, someone who wanted to look a bit like Elton John?

I'm willing to forgive that one, as I've been known to buy two pairs of really good shoes or pants.
