Strange narrative structure

Really liked the film but I think the film may not appeal to a lot of people due to the weird narrative structure and various characters singing dialogue. It has the feel of a cruise ship show which may be off putting to some. Minus the sex scenes i could definitely see this on a cruise ship much like mama mia

As has been said before this isn't a straight ahead biopic about Elton John's life. It's a Fantasy musical as much as anything else and that's what makes it special for me. It tries something different and doesn't hold back from the wild times and addictions of John. I like to see what cruise ship you'd be on if you see this on it lol.

They had to break up the narrative structure to keep the film from being a total letdown. I mean, what's the story here? Guy has musical talent, makes it big, because a self-indulgent egomaniac and addict, gets help. If they'd told it in straightforward linear fashion, the first half of the film would have been a blast, and the audience would start checking their phones after the first hour. By bringing in the framing device of the rehab stay, the film evened the tone, bringing some of the serious stuff into the first half.

And having the flamboyant Elton tell his own story freed the film from the obligations of realism.

As it was the film's second half was a big of a letdown, but it could have been worse. I liked the film as a whole, I'll forgive a crazy musical just about anything, but he film isn't perfect, and that's mostly because the story isn't that interesting and the protagonist loses our sympathy towards the end. That's something the filmmakers were aware of and tried to deal with, but not with 100% success.
