shareI thought they told the story in a really interesting and effective way. Elton John's many fans would certainly care about his story and although there are some similarities to other films, this one is still worthwhile.

I love Elton John's music.... it reminds me of some of the best times of my life.
I just feel like this story's been told, and he didn't need to add his story to the pile of stories that are eerily similar. Fame is is dirty whore.
Whatever I think of the film, it won't change how I love the music.
Except his fans would have probably enjoyed it a lot more if it was either Elton singing the songs at the very least a good impersonator instead of the god awful actor that butchered the songs. Watching this show is a great way to understand why they had Malik lip syncing instead of trying to actually sing like Freddie.
shareI was a BIG Elton John fan back in the day (I graduated to Billy Joel's more grown-up lyrics), and I'm not going to watch this movie precisely because I was a fan. Young people don't know, but at the time he was the biggest rock star on planet earth. His performances were electric, even when he was drunk and stoned off his gourd. Before he was 28, he'd forgotten more than most of the newer acts would ever know about performing.
So what will this actor do? A near-beer performance.
These kinds of movies are for people who don't really like the artist much or haven't really followed them. Or, maybe, only know the old Elton, who's but a shadow of his former self. I'd prefer to plug into "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" and enjoy the real Elton's voice and music. But that's just me.

But yeah, the story this film tells isnt incredibly interesting and Elton isnt a very sympathetic protagonist... but hey, anything for a musical film! This film works much better as a musical than a drama, and IMHO they should have dispensed with the drama and put in more songs.
I think it looks pretty good! I'll probably rent it.
shareWell, actually - and not getting melodramatic or overly deep, I thought he sort of represented a whole lot of ordinary people (or famous) who were failed by people - like parents - and justifiably rebelled against normal society - but generally not really wanting to (just forced via abuse).
