Gives me hope for the TV series

I've had sort of mixed feelings about the spin-off TV series they're doing for HTTYD. I mean, I'd love to see more of these characters, but SO many shows of this kind turn out awful. Now granted, I felt good when I heard that they're trying to preserve the "darker" tone of the movie, and not just make a typical watered-down kiddie show. But it still seemed so intangible.

But then I saw "Gift of the Night Fury", and suddenly I find myself more excited for the show. I mean, it's basically the length that one of the episodes would be, so it almost seems like a protoype anyway.

Now, granted, there'll be wrinkles that need ironed out, and they'll need to settle into more of a groove for the show (GotNF seemed kind of listless at times, like it didn't know how it should proceed with the story). And I hope they polish up the animation on Toothless (I'm not expecting the caliber of animation we saw in the movie, but maybe a happy middle ground).

But I found "Gift of the Night Fury" to be perfectly enjoyable overall, with some good laughs and a really touching ending. I can't help but feel that if the show is this good, it would be worthwhile. And if they do polish things up and take the show seriously, it could actually be really good, and serve as a nice distraction at least until the sequel comes out.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Seeing that 90 page storyboard which was leaked this past week made me a lot more optimistic about the show. The quality of the visuals and graphics seem like they will be as good as they were in Gift of the Night Fury (which if you ask me matched the quality of the original movie in terms of attention to detail).

The music might feel out of place at times cause diehard fans like me associate the music with specific scenes in the original, but that shouldn't be a deal breaker.

The real question for me is the plot. Will it just be a series of random stories and adventures or will there be a story arch that is an important set up for the sequel? I personally hope it's the former. And yeah, if all the episodes are as good as Gift of the Night Fury, than the TV series is going to be extremely enjoyable!

Yeah, I'd like the former, too. A good chance to see many different kinds of dragons, see the characters in different kinds of situations, etc. We have/will have plenty of broader drama with the movies. The series will be a good chance to focus on more intimate plots and to flesh out the world is slices of detail.

Now, don't quote me on this 100%, but on Jay Baruchel's Wikipedia, it says he's returning for this TV show, which gives me a little hope. Of all the voice actors in the film, if I could only pick one to use in the series, it would be him. His voice is so distinctive and really important to Hiccup's character. And also, as the main character, he would talk a lot, and it would be soo weird hearing somebody else. It's not that surprising to me that he would want to stay for the series, he loves HTTYD and Hiccup. But he's also very attatched to his Canada home, so they might record his stuff while also recording for the movie. I mean. I guess. :)

100% agreed. I'm sure you watched the deleted scenes for Gift of the Night Fury. The lack of Jay's voice in those scenes is galling. Even if Astrid's voice sounds laced with testosterone like it does in this clip...

...that's not nearly as bad as some dude pretending that he can replace Baruchel as the nasally voice of Hiccup.
