Why is Astrid a Girly-Girl in this movie?

In the previous film(s), Astrid was a warrior girl who was capable of standing her own against the world's most dangerous dragons. In Gift of the Night Fury, she's only what I can describe as a Girly-Girl; she no longer seems to imbue that fighter's strength that she had previously.

I think the reason she is laid back and easy going is because of the context of situation. She needed to be a warrior girl in the first movie cause the situation called for fighting and killing dragons. After all, fighting and killing dragons was the way of life for Vikings on Berk.

But now that there is peace between dragons and vikings thanks to Hiccup and Toothless, her warrior side is basically in hibernation. She did show a brief glimpse of her warrior side when she said "maybe you'd rather taste a punch in the face?" and gave Tuffnut a death glare, but otherwise, yes, she was more of a "girly girl."

I was find with that. Astrid started showing her warm, soft side in the original movie after the Romantic Flight scene, so I don't think her actions in GotNF were out of character. Besides, HTTYD 2 and 3 are sure to reawaken her warrior side as the Vikings undoubtedly face new enemies. There is a general consensus on the HTTYD board that the second and third movies will introduce a human antagonist of some sort - probably Alvin The Treacherous from the book series. When that happens, Astrid will return to being the bad ass chick we all loved from the first movie.

It's also a Christmas like holiday, some folks just get mushy and more laid back around that time of the year.

Forgot to mention that. Yes, Snoggletog made every Viking happy and cheerful.

Astird's personality was weirding me out too, but like DDPoodle explained, it does show us why. Besides, nobody can still be staying all rough and tough during the holidays. It wouldn't be meant that way.

Plenty of tomboys grow up to be "girly girls." The thing about the HTTYD franchise is that time does pass and the characters age and grow. It's not like so many other cartoons where every character is basically the same forever, most egregiously The Simpsons.
